Fun, Fresh, Inviting Design
Perception is reality when it comes to UX. If a user perceives something as complicated, frustrating, or "just not for me", they'll leave. As such, web 3.0 needs to be inviting. It needs to appeal to users and break down perception barriers that currently push away everyday users. Much of the buzz around web 3.0 has been around technologies like NFTs and blockchain, both of which are perceived very technical and overly-hyped by the average person. As a result, there's only a niche group of power users that create and control most of the current web 3.0 experience. Web 3.0's "branding" can help. My recommendation to web 3.0 Designers is to have a fun, fresh, inviting design that excites everyday users and assures them that web 3.0 is for them.
Use bright, cheerful colors.
Web 3.0 needs to be fresh and bright. It needs to avoid coming off as overly technical and "for developers and crypto junkies." Don't shy away from using bright backgrounds and plenty of color.
Use images and visuals that that are playful and authentic. Go wild with illustrations. Animations welcome.
Visuals should either explain how something works, delight users, or make them feel welcomed and included. Focus on diverse images and authentic everyday users. For web 3.0 to attract all types of users, it needs to show those users in its visual design. Avoid overly technical or pixelated styles that have dominated many original NFT designs. These resonate with a subgroup of users, but not with the everyday user. Use illustrations generously to explain concepts and communicate complex ideas efficiently.
Embrace minimalism.
Keep it simple and elegant. Don't overwhelm users. If you've used Discord, you can likely relate to the feeling of being overloaded with information, colors, emojis, and activity. While Discord has been successful with its current user group (younger, tech-savvy, mostly male), it's not inviting to everyday users. Web 3.0 needs to embrace minimalism to provide a clear, smooth user experience that doesn't overburden the user with visuals and information.
Embrace little moments of creativity and excitement.
It doesn't need to be boring, nor should it be. Web 3.0 can be fun, playful, and inviting. Designers will have the opportunity to get creative and playfully surprise and delight users. They'll have a chance to break norms and get away from bland enterprise branding. Bring life and personality to Design.
