We are an organization of UW students who train and investigate the traditional chinese internal martial art of Chen Style Tai Chi Chuan. We hold training sessions on campus once or twice each week. We are informal and have fun, but we also take our tai chi training seriously.
We will meet on Monday and Wednesday/Thurday evenings for Spring 2010. All are welcome. Please join our email list to be informed. Follow the link to join uwtaichi-list , our confidential group email list, to stay posted on our current schedule, events, cancellations, etc. This is the best way to stay in touch with our activities.
For taiji training, please wear loose and comfortable clothing and athletic shoes, preferably lightweight shoes with flat soles. Arrive early if possible and begin loosening up. It's ok to arrive late or leave early if your schedule requires it. We will be teaching the traditional curriculum of Chen Family Taijiquan, as taught by our teacher Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei. This will include: joint loosening exercises, standing meditation, silk reeling exercises, and the traditional old frame first routine (Lao Jia Yi Lu).
Most training sessions are led by founding member and head instructor Byron Hartman, an advanced student of Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei. Byron earned his PhD from the Department of Biological Structure at the University of Washington in 2009 and is currently at the UW as a Senior Research Fellow. Byron also teaches Chen Style Tai Chi classes open to the public at Laurelhurst Community Center and is the founder of the Chen Tai Chi Training and Research Organization of Seattle, which is a community organization open to UW students as well as the public. We also sometimes host guest instructors and participate in seminars taught by visiting coaches.
