Byron Hartman is an advanced student of Master Guo Lei as well as an advanced student of Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei. Byron earned his PhD from the Department of Biological Structure at the University of Washington in 2009 and is currently at the UW as a Senior Research Fellow. He began training in Chen Family Tai Chi under the mentorship of Master Guo Lei, in 2000. Byron received four years of intensive private lessons with Guo Lei. It was through the generosity and high standards of Guo Lei's teaching that Byron developed a solid foundation in Chen Tai Chi. Since 2003, Byron has sought to further his development through many training camps and private lessons with Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei, and also Grandmaster Chen Xiaowang. Byron is honored to have been asked to teach and promote Chen Tai Chi by Grandmaster Chen Zhenglei and Master Guo Lei. Byron began teaching privately in 2004 and founded the Chen Tai Chi Training and Research Organization at UW in 2006.

Byron would also like to aknowledge the following skilled coaches who have provided valuable guidance in lessons and seminars: Chen Bin, Gao Yongli, Hong Yijiao, Charles Pierce, Sana Shanti, George Xu, David Leung, Brian Knack, Yang Jun, and Jeff Crosland. As well, Byron appreciates the experiences he has shared through exchange with several skilled practice partners and friends, including: Clarke Hudson, Andrew Shinn, Derryl Willis, Michael Blackburn and Lance Lu. Byron is married to Yukiko Hartman and is grateful for the support of his family, friends, and students.
