Constitution of the Military Medical Student Association
Article I – Name
Section 1 The name of this organization shall be the Military Medical Student Association (MMSA).
Article II – Purpose
Section 1 It shall be the purpose of this organization to serve as an informational resource to
those who are interested in military medicine and as a network for those already
involved in military medicine.
Article III – Affiliations
Section 1 There are no official affiliations.
Article IV – Membership
Section 1 Any University of Washington student interested in military medicine.
Section 2 Associate members will include any students outside the University of Washington who express interest in learning about military medicine.
Section 3 No specific eligibility requirements exist outside of those stated in Sections 1 and 2 of Article IV.
Article V – Officers
Section 1 The officers of this organization shall consist of:
· One president with the following duties:
o Conduct meetings
o Oversee the general operations of MMSA
o Coordinate the Army, Air Force, and Navy interests
· One vice president with the following duties:
o Assist the president
o Perform the duties of the president in the absence of the president
· Chairperson of the Army Section
o Serve as a liaison for Army members
o Access information resources regarding Army medicine
o Coordinate events regarding Army medicine
· Chairperson of the Air Force Section
o Serve as a liaison for Air Force members
o Access information resources regarding Air Force medicine
o Coordinate events regarding Air Force medicine
· Chairperson of the Navy Section
o Serve as a liaison for Navy members
o Access information resources regarding Navy medicine
o Coordinate events regarding Navy medicine
Section 2 All officers must be enrolled as students in the University of Washington School of
Medicine and involved in military medicine.
Section 3 The term of office for all positions will be one year beginning on November 1 and ending on October 31.
Section 4 Provisions for removal of an officer:
· An officer may be removed if the officer no longer meets or fulfills the requirements of his or her office
· An officer may be removed by a fifty percent majority vote if that officer has failed to fulfill the duties of his or her office.
Article VI – Election
Section 1 Selection of officers shall be held during the month of October each year. The
president shall inform the members of an upcoming election meeting via email at
least two weeks prior to an election.
Section 2 Any permanent vacancy of any office shall be filled by election within four weeks of
the vacancy. Until the vacancy is filled by election, the following rules shall apply:
· The vice president shall temporarily perform the duties of the president.
· The president shall temporarily perform the duties of a chairperson.
· The president shall temporarily perform the duties of the vice president.
Section 3 Voting may occur by paper or email ballots. A fifty percent majority is required to
pass any vote.
Section 4 Fourth year medical students will not be elected as officers during the annual
elections in October due to their anticipated graduation and subsequent vacancy of
their position. Two exceptions will apply: (1) if the position is not filled by another
person at the time of election, the fourth year student may continue to serve until a
replacement officer fills the position, and (2) if the fourth year student expects to
fulfill the requirements of the office after graduation until the annual elections.
Article VII – Meetings
Section 1 Meetings will be scheduled at the discretion of the president. At least one meeting
per year will be held. The president will inform members of upcoming meetings via
email at least one week prior to the meeting.
Section 2 A quorum shall consist of three voting members.
Article VII - Executive Board
Section 1 Management of the organization shall be vested in the members and officers of the organization.
Article VIII - Constitutional Amendments
Section 1 The constitution may be amended by a fifty percent majority vote by members at any regular or special meeting.
Section 2 Members will be notified of an upcoming proposal for amendment by the president at least one week prior to voting.
