What is DAP?

The Disability Awareness Program (DAP) will be a training session designed for University of Washington faculty, staff and students to participate in. The immediate objective of this project is to educate members of the university community on the needs and concerns of students with disabilities. The overall aim of DAP is to enhance the inclusion, awareness and acceptance of people with disabilities at the UW and to advance the university's progress towards a campus that discourages discrimination and openly celebrates diversity

Hiring

For the 2006-07 academic year, DASA is hiring a training coordinator for the DAP. This job requires a coordinator to be responsible for training groups of faculty, staff and students on how to be "disability friendly." The rationale behind educational outreach in a workshop-style format is that it encourages engagement and interaction with the material presented. During the workshops, trainees will be presented with various disability awareness information, ranging from discussions with students with disabilities to current academic theories on disability.

DASA intends that the coordinator have a great deal of autonomy administrating the DAP program. The DASA advisory board will provided budget oversight and guidance, while the coordinator to be charged with creating program content.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Act as the instructor and coordinator for DAP workshop series
  • Assist in the preparation of curriculum
  • Prepare classroom/equipment for workshops and classes
  • Maintain stock of presentation materials

Criteria for Selection:

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to teach to diverse audiences with varying knowledge and background concerning disability issues
  • Experience with computer programs (Word, Excel, and Access)
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize work

Compensation:

The coordinator is compensated through a stipend in an amount consistent with pay rates of ASUW commission directors. It is our hope that the person who fills this position will be able to combine this work with an internship credit program within an academic major. We anticipate this position will require 15 hours of work per week, and at this point can guarantee it to last the duration of the 2006-2007 academic year. (Beginning February 2007)
