Membership
As a national honor society, Xi Sigma Pi Alpha Chapter seeks out the best and the brightest undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences. A Xi Sigma Pi member not only has a strong academic background in forestry and related fields, but also is a paragon of moral character, honesty, hard work and faithfulness. Relationships forged in Xi Sigma Pi outlast time spent at the University; your fellow members will remain friends, mentors, and colleagues long after graduation.
Nominations for membership are carried out during the Spring Quarter of each year, after which the nominees will receive notification. New inductees must fulfill several requirements prior to induction and attend the annual induction ceremony and banquet.
Undergraduate student requirements for nomination
- Junior or Senior standing
- Declared Environmental Science and Resource Management (ESRM) major
- At least 15 credits in ESRM or closely related courses
- Top 25% of class
- At least 3.5 GPA
Graduate student requirements for nomination
- At least 15 credits in ESRM and School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) or closely related courses
- Top 50% of class
- At least 3.8 GPA
Occasionally a student who does not meet all of the above requirements may be nominated based on outstanding accomplishments and dedication to the field of forestry and the environmental sciences.
If you are interested in membership but were not nominated, you may self-nominate. This includes students who are in the College of the Environment but are not ESRM/SEFS majors. To do so, please send an email to xsp@uw.edu with your self-nomination including: your academic history and GPA, pertinent coursework and experience pertaining to forestry and the environmental sciences, your motivation for becoming a Xi Sigma Pi member and anything else you’d like the officers to consider. Self-nominations are voted in by a majority vote of the current chapter officers.
