Introduction

Computers and computing are becoming an essential part of our everyday lives. Our Computing and Software Systems program provides an opportunity for students to be on the leading edge in this challenging and rapidly expanding field.

The curriculum focuses on the breadth of computer software design, development, maintenance and re-engineering. It prepares students for a wide range of careers in the private and public sectors including software engineer, computer scientist, systems analyst, systems programmer, applications programmer, database designer, and e-commerce software designer. In addition, the program provides students a foundation for graduate education appropriate for careers in basic or applied research, development and teaching. It also provides opportunities for practicing professionals to keep abreast of emerging theory and application.

Our goal is to provide students with the theoretical base and an understanding of the culture that promotes the life-long evolution needed to stay competitive in this ever-changing field.

Mission

The mission of the Computing and Software Systems program is to offer high-quality, upper-division undergraduate education to meet the needs of a diverse range of citizens and employers in the state of Washington, especially in the South Puget Sound region.

The program focuses on preparing students to enter the broad field of computer software design, development, and maintenance. It develops the theoretical base and cultural understanding to promote life-long evolution within the rapidly changing field, while preparing students to quickly become effective competitors, innovators and entrepreneurs in the field. The program also provides opportunities for the practicing professional to keep abreast of emerging theory and application. The program actively seeks partnerships with local leading professionals and companies to advance the field through collaborative ventures, forums, research, and internships.

Focus

The program prepares students for a wide variety of career options in the computer field, with an emphasis on software design, development, maintenance, and re-engineering.

Goals

Upon Graduation from the Computing and Software Systems program, graduates should:

  • Enter the field able to be major contributors as quickly as possible.
  • Possess the theoretical and conceptual base, and the commitment to life-long learning critical to this rapidly evolving profession.
  • Have the confidence and entrepreneurial spirit which encourages leadership in the evolution of the field.
  • Understand the fundamentals and value further formal academic study.

The program also aims to be accessible to and serve the needs of the local community.
