5/26/05 - There will be a Return to the Moon VI conference held at the Flamingo in Las Vegas. The dates of the conference are July 21-23, 2005. Past RTM conferences have featured astronauts, space entrepreneurs, and many other experts in the space industry. Plus there will be a showing of SEDS students from across the country, which is sure to be a good time! If you are interested, email SEDS-UW soon so we can hook you up with possible airfare/hotel/conference fee deals.

4/27/05: New internships and research info available on the Resources webpage!

3/29/05: Welcome back for Spring quarter! We have some fun events planned for this quarter, including Yuri's Night, Observatory trips, and Planetarium trips. We will be contacting members by email to inform them of the dates. Sound like fun? Info on how to join SEDS and get on the mailing list can be found here.

If you have a minute, fill out a Space Generation survey available online. The results will be presented to the Mars Society, the AIAA, and IAF. Check out www.space-generation.org for more information about the Space Generation Foundation. They have a great list of activities you can do to get more involved in the promotion of space!

2/5/05: Are you looking for a summer internship? Research? Scholarship information? Check out the new Resources webpage, created for students who want to get actively involved in the space industry.

2/4/05: Check out a Hubble Repair Mission presentation, made available by Bruck Balick of the UW Astronomy Dept.

As defined by the SEDS-USA website, "SEDS is an independent, student-based organization which promotes the exploration and development of space. SEDS pursues this mission by educating people about the benefits of space, by supporting a network of interested students, by providing an opportunity for members to develop their leadership skills, and by inspiring people through involvement in space-related projects. SEDS believes in a space-faring civilization and that focusing the enthusiasm of young people is the key to our future in space."

Students for the Exploration and Development of Space was founded in 1980 at MIT and Princeton and consists of an international group of high school, undergraduate, and graduate students from a diverse range of educational backgrounds who are working to promote space as a whole. SEDS is a chapter based organization with chapters throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The permanent National Headquarters for SEDS-USA resides at MIT. Each chapter is fairly independent and coordinates activities and projects in its own area. For more background, see the SEDS History Project .

The SEDS chapter at the University of Washington is one of the newest but also one of the most active clubs in the nation. SEDS-UW is also the only club that represents the Pacific Northwest. Since its founding in 2004, SEDS-UW has hosted professional lectures, organized planetarium and observatory tours, and spread information about scholarships and programs to its wide member base. This year two of our officers had the opportunity to volunteer at the national SEDS conference in order to form connections with other chapters around the country. Our goal for the 2005-2006 school year is to organize a microgravity experiment between our school and a public high school in order to promote science and math education at the high school level.

Prominent SEDS Alumni:

SEDS has several prominent alumni in the aerospace field. Peter Diamandis (Chairman and Founder of X Prize Foundation) founded SEDS along with Todd Hawley (cofounder of International Space University) in 1980. Mark Adler, the project manager for the Mars rover Spirit, was a former SEDS member at Caltech back in the late-80s and early-90s. He served as the treasurer for the 1989 SEDS International Conference, which was held in conjunction with the Voyager Neptune encounter in late August. This is just a sampling of the many SEDS alumni who have made significant contributions to space exploration in the years since leaving school.
