Welcome

Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Washington. Living on your own for the first time can be a little overwhelming. You have to adjust to a new school, learn a new system, and make new friends, while still achieving academically in a competitive collegiate atmosphere.

However, you don't have to face these challenges alone. Joining a fraternity means that you have the help of more experienced members in registering for classes, finding your way around, studying, and choosing your major. Moreover, the day you step into a fraternity you gain a house full of new friends.

The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity gives you all of this and a competitive advantage that other fraternities cannot match.

Who are these Pikes?

Pi Kappa Alpha has a tradition of excellence in athletics, scholarship, leadership, and the social aspects of college life.

Pikes work harder and play harder than other fraternities. The camaraderie and spirit found here help each member become the best they can be.

Athletic Champions

Pi Kappa Alpha is the dominant power in fraternity athletics at the UW. Pikes have won the last six Fraternity Intramural Sports Awards and eight out of the last ten.

In most years, Pikes make the playoffs in every sport, often advancing to the semi-finals and finals. Not content to just reach the playoffs, Pikes win them, wrapping up the year with a number of first place finishes.

Aside from intramurals, Pikes also traditionally excel in other fraternity competitions. In 2001, we won both the Alpha Chi Omega Frisbee Fling ultimate frisbee tournament and the Delta Delta Delta Spike-It volleyball tournament. We also placed highly in Kappa Kappa Gamma's Extreme Games and Alpha Delta Phi's Mardi Gras competition, among others.

Academic Excellence

Pi Kappa Alpha's house grade point average (GPA) consistently ranks in the top ten among fraternities at Washington.

Our Autumn 2000 and Winter 2001 quarterly GPA for members were 3.11 and 3.26, respectively. Both numbers exceed the All-Fraternity, All-Men's, and All-Undergraduate Average. Our Winter 2001 pledge class had a 3.14 GPA during their pledge quarter, showing that academics are second to none. Because of our high GPA, Pikes at UW have won the Pi Kappa Alpha Northwest Regional Scholarship Award for the 19th year in a row, every year since our refounding in 1981.

In 2000-01, we had members in the following academic organizations and/or honor societies (number in parentheses indicates the number of members):
Phi Beta Kappa (1)
National Mortar Board (4)
Order of Omega (12)
Phi Eta Sigma (3)
Golden Key (2)
UW Dean's List (25)
4.0 GPA (1)

Social Life

The University of Washington is not just about studying and getting into a major. There is plenty of time to meet people, make friends and have a good time.

From road trips to dances, room parties to barbecues, beach trips to blow outs, we don't miss a chance to relax a little.

The first big event of the year is our Fireman's Ball formal dance, held in Vancouver, B.C. As soon as the ceremony's out we hit the hottest clubs in town... The Millenium Club and The Stone Temple.

In May is Seaside Weekend, our annual road trip. All the brothers grab a date and head down to the beach. We have bonfires, beach football, do the touristy things, and above all else, party tough. Nobody misses this event, and no one goes home disappointed.

Friendship

Athletics, academics and social events mean little if you don't like the people you live with. Pi Kappa Alpha is a tight-knit unit. The friendships our members make last a lifetime. Our members are always ready to lend each other a helping hand, and this bond is also extended to our pledges. Pikes do not give bids to prospective members without intending to initiate them. Hazing can play no part in a friendship.

This friendship is not shared just among active members; our alumni are also actively involved with the fraternity. Alumni often provide career guidance, job references and placement assistance.

Pikes are everywhere...

Pikes are more than just a single, isolated chapter. The University of Washington chapter is just one of 210 Pi Kappa Alpha chapters and colonies across the United States and Canada. Pi Kappa Alpha is one of the largest and strongest national fraternities.

Can you imagine having brothers at all of the nation's best colleges and universities? Pikes are everywhere.

Pi Kappa Alpha's national prestige can be seen right here in the Northwest. With chapters at Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Linfield, Idaho, Montana State, and the University of Alberta, Pikes have more chapters in the region than almost everyone else. Imagine the extension of friendship that reaches all over the region.

The benefits of such a strong base of support are many and varied. The national fraternity provides scholarships and low-interest loans to help you financially. There are also regional and national conventions where you can meet Pikes from across North America.

Wherever you go, whatever you do, Pikes will be there to help you. It's a network of brothers that you can always count on.

College Years: The Best

Thanks for taking the time to take a look at Pi Kappa Alpha. The brothers extend to you our welcome and wish you good luck for your college years, no matter where you decide to go: be it the dorms or another fraternity. But if you want to get the best out of your college years, through sports and social activities, while still living in an academic environment, then Pikes may be the place for you.
