Calendar of Events

We are committed to hosting events that reflect our dual purpose of
promoting Native American law students and encouraging interest in
Indian Law. Our calendar of events continues to develop, and we hope
you’ll be able to join us at the following events.

Past Events

				- Speaker Event: Heather
				Kendall-Miller
Heather Kendall-Miller, an Athabascan attorney from the Native
American Rights Fund, spoke to the UWLS community about the
protection of Tribal hunting and fishing rights, climate change,
and other environmental issues in Alaska. At the time she spoke,
she was working on Native Village of Kivalina, a suit brought by
an Alaskan Native Village whose island home and way of life had
been destroyed by global warming, against 24 of the largest oil
and energy companies. NALSA was thrilled to host on of the most
renowned environmental and Indian law attorneys in the country.

				- Rural Alaska Tax Assistance Program
For the last fifteen years, the Alaska Business Development
Center has partnered with UWLS students to send volunteers from
the school to rural areas to assist with tax preparation. Teams
of five spend a couple of days in a number of villages, working
nonstop to help people fill out their taxes.

				- Moot Court Competition
 In 2011, Brie
Coyle and Andy Murphy took second place at the 2011 National
Native American Law Student Association Moot Court tournament as
one of the few 1L teams in the 66 team field (28 schools). They
are especially thankful for all the help that they received from
UWLS faculty. This year we are pleased to be sending a number of
teams to the 2012 National NALSA moot court competition in
				Hawaii.

				- Salmon Bingo
 This year's installment
of our Salmon Bingo dinner was a huge success. Daybreak Star
Center was such a gracious host to our more than 75 guests. We
would especially like to thank everyone who supported our
efforts with their time, sweat, food donations, prize donations,
and for buying so many raffle tickets! We look forward to
				another wonderfully successful year.
