JOIN AVELA!

Why Join AVELA?

group picture

University of Washington students who join AVELA will have the opportunity to flex their STEM and teaching talents by working with experienced undergraduate and graduate students, University Professors, K-12 teachers, community leaders, and industry professionals. AVELA members will learn how to work in teams to brainstorm, develop, and test personalized STEM workshops tailored for K-12 students based on Washington State Common Core Standards (Learning Standards). AVELA members will also learn how to teach their projects to K-12 students in the communities that are predominantly underserved and being gentrified, which are the communities that our members live, and/or came from.

“AVELA has allowed me to do what I value greatly: Give back to my community. I see my younger self in the students that I teach, which in return inspires me to be a better instructor, mentor, and friend.”

Weekly Meeting Information

During our meetings we discuss updates on our current projects and also plan for upcoming projects. If there is a current project that you have an interest in, this would be the time to connect with the team working on the project to become more involved. If you have an idea for a new project, this would be a good place to share with the group and get feedback before working to create a new project proposal.

Date: Every Friday!
