Our Mission
We are the University of Washington chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE). Our goal as an Engineering Student Organization is to provide opportunities for students to learn about engineering, optimizing, and processing fiber composites.
With the benefit of generous donations from our industry partners, we have the privilege of working with industry-grade prepreg materials and professional processing techniques that are rarely accessible at the student level.
As our goal is purely to enrich our members' engineering experience, we do not have an application process. The only requirement to join us at our meetings is to be ready to learn and grow as a community. Although most of our members are Materials Science and Engineering majors or those with interest in MSE, anyone from any major is welcome.
Our Year
- Fall — Foundation New members are familiarized with fiber composites, manufacturing techniques, and the theory behind composite mechanics.
- Winter — Design Teams begin the iterative design process for the annual bridge competition, running calculations, building test specimens, and refining layouts.
- Spring — Competition We ramp into competition season, finalizing our bridge design and competing at the annual SAMPE conference against national and international schools.
