Saint Bunstable Spring Fling

MAY 13th, 1999 - 1:00 PM

Sylvan Theater @ UW Campus

The College of St Bunstable invites you to partake in it's annual Spring Fling!

This year marks the third year for the College Rapier Protector Tourney.  This years tourney will be held as an accolades tourney (basically you fight whoever you want, as many times as you wan for a set amount of time, then everyone votes on who goes to the finals....at which point the tourney becomes single elim, cumulative wounds).

Come one, come all. Whether to show your strength of arms, or just to have some fun! We will also be choosing our new College Champion (see below for info), as well as awarding the Light of St Bunstable. This is the college's award for service above and beyond. (see below for details)

Site will be the Sylvan theater at the UW (directions below). Site fee is$5 per person. The site will open at noon, event will begin around 1:00. There will be a snack tray of munchies.

College Champion:
The championship is chosen as the best representation of the three ideals of the College: Knowledge, Community and Passion (or as in last years case, Obsession). An entry should consist of your application of these three ideals, in any format, with extra points for creativity.

Some suggestions, and past entries are:

Do not feel limited by these examples... If can think of a way to present the 3 ideals better for you, go for it!

Ideally you should contact the current champion, Lord Ramon de la Vega(jgreywolf@xcentric.net) at least 2 weeks prior to the event, but realistically entries will be accepted up to the day of the event. No entries after the competition is over will be considered. :)

Directions:
Take I5 to the 45th street exit. Follow 45th, and Turn Right on 15th. Turn left on 40th. There should be signs up, but in there aren't... Take first right turn onto Stevens Way, Sylvan Theater is a wooded area across from Mason Road. There is alleyway between the Electrical Engineering Building and the Site for offloading only, and parking is nearby.

Site Fee: $5.00

Light of Saint Bunstable:
This is the yearly award given to the person who has contributed the most to the College. The most recent recipient of this award was Sonnet Manon, the current seneschal of the college for her years of service. This award should reflect ideals of the Society. This award does not need to be given to a member of the college, but merely someone who has helped the college in any significant way.  Please contact Sonnet with your recomendations!

Saint Bunstable Spring Fling Recap

MAY 9th, 1999 - Sylvan Theater @ UW Campus

Seneschals Report

To Madrone and its Cantons, I send greetings.

The major event of the last Month for the College was of course the Spring Fling. And since I was the Autocrat for said event, for my Seneschal's monthly greeting I will give you a report on the event. To summarize: IT WAS FUN!

Let me expand on that a little bit.

As co-autocrats, Badger and I had budgeted the event for 40 people. We had 45 people show up, 4 of which were kids, and so we showed a $5 profit! For our first event in a while, with a rather soggy beginning, that's not a bad turnout. The site, though damp, was green and lovely.

Fencing: The MIC was Duncan an Mangan, and he did a great job. First there was a grand melee to determine who would hold the field. Yvon Maurice-Charon was the victor there. Next was the double elimination Hold the Field Tourney, and in the end Indigo defeated Samuel to take the prize. Then the fencers, just for fun, jumped aboard a burning ship in search of booty (or a stake bag) and we all did a Burning Deck Scenario. It was a fun time had by all.

The College Championship: The championship had only one entry, Badger, and he entered his pants. Actually, for his Knowledge entry, he entered a two page paper on a pair of 16th century German influenced paned trunk hose that he had made. For his Passion and Community entry he gave an impromptu mini-lecture on the topic of badges, and how they are used in the SCA.

Feast of St. Lunchtable: A success!! A most tasty feast. Cooked for us by Gabrielle Lepinay, and Wilhelm Burchart. And we even got to go back for seconds.

Court: Their Excellencies were most pleased with what they had witnessed that day, and were especially pleased with Indigo. Upon recommendation of the Officers, the College asked Indigo to become our College Protector and Defender, who's other titles include, but are not limited to, The Dragger of the Dagger, The High Mucky Buckler, The Velocirapier, The Drainer of the Flaming Chalice, and Guardian of Students Everywhere. Their Excellencies, and the former Champion Lyonette Dragon, deemed Badgers entry worthy and offered him the office of Champion of the College. Also, Badger was awarded the Light of St. Bunstable in appreciation for his continuing service to the College. After that there was a great and joyful noise, and we all cleaned up the site, and went home. All in all a successful event.

Finally I would like to thank some people who helped to make the event happen as well as it did: To Duncan for organizing the tourney. To Indigo for accepting the Protector position. To Wilhelm for lunch. To Gabrielle for lunch and Chirurgeoning. To Lyonette for organizing the Championship. To Owen for collecting the award recommendations. To Baron Trahearn for coming up with all those great titles for the protector. To Badger for teaching me to Autocrat and for Autocratting when I had to attend to things like midterms. And finally to everyone who came for making it a great event. I hope you had as much fun as I did. I hope to see you all at Tacky Tourney! (July 11th!)

In service,

Sonnet Manon, Bunnies Seneschal.

Schedule of Events....

College Championship:

It is time, once again, to choose the Champion of the College of St. Bunstable. This Championship is to be determined, not through strength of arms, but by quickness and clarity of the mind. In this manner, the Championship shall be determined by the three Pillars of the College: Learning, Passion, and Community.

Each contestant will enter two pieces to be judged at the Championship. The first piece is a static piece, displaying knowledge and skill in a particular aspect of the Medieval arts. This entry may be calligraphy, woodcarving, costuming, cooking (though, if it is food, it is advised to prepare in advance to have enough for everybody to share!), a written essay, or any number of other things. For this entry, some documentation is required; essentially, all that is needed is a historical reference, in the form of an illustration or citation, from a published source. In-depth documentation is not required.

The second piece will be a presentation. The ideal of this piece is to communicate the entrant's passion for learning, and bring it to the community. Entries in the past have included a workshop on designing a device for the SCA, instructions on period speech and the traditions of cloven fruit, and an historical timeline of the period encompassed by the SCA. Other suggestions have included a mock-recreation of a medieval village, a cooking class, or a period fashion show. This is the piece to have fun with! The judging will be blatantly biased towards pieces that let the audience participate and enjoy themselves.

If you are interested in competing for the Championship, please contact Lyonette Dragon with your submissions by the Day of the event.

Feast of Saint Bunstable:

Last year we held a feast to honor our patron saint. This year we are offering a small repast to people in the same spirit, but due to site restrictions could not make it the grand potluck feast that it was.. But it should be Tasty, and Nourishing.
