Welcome,

The Native American Students in Advanced Academia (NASAA) at the University of Washington was created to bring together graduate and professional students of Native American, First Nations, and Alaskan Native descent as well as our other Indigenous relatives. Our goal is to increase awareness of the diversity and excellence of the ongoing research, work and achievement of these students, and to provide a forum for us to socialize, network, and disseminate information.

Thriving in the House of Knowledge: New Directions in Graduate Research and Scholarship

Native American Students in Advanced Academia Present:
The 8th Annual Symposium of Native Scholarship at the University of Washington
April 3rd, 2009
UW Club Conference Room
9:00 - 4:30 PM

The theme of the 2009 NASAA Symposium is “Thriving in the House of Knowledge.” We invite Indigenous researchers, scholars, and community members to give presentations on research, scholarly work, or community-based knowledge centering on examples of our work and how it reflects the way Indigenous students, faculty, and staff thrive in an academic environment (e.g., family, community, friends, mentors, knowledge and value systems, research and scholarship, etc.). While work from within any discipline is welcomed, individuals who are engaged in cross-border or trans-border studies are particularly encouraged to submit abstracts.

Indigenous graduate and professional students, staff, faculty members, and community scholars are invited to submit an abstract for the opportunity to present their work, or to be part of a panel that will discuss ideas pertaining to this year’s theme. Scholarly work or concepts may be communicated in one of the following formats:

  • Oral Presentation - 10 to 15 minutes
  • Poster Session - one hour
  • Panel - will consist of three to five thematically grouped presenters: 45-60 minutes
