Early fall quarter ASCP-UW hosted our first event of the school year, an osteoporosis screening at the annual Korean Community Health Fair on October 10, 2015. We screened over 80 participants at the St. Andrew Kim Church which has made this event one of the busiest and engaged ASCP-UW hosted screenings. Both the elderly and younger adults were eager to participate and were understandable of longer wait times. Our preceptors and students were able to consult patients on their bone density measurements and methods to prevent osteoporosis including recommendations for supplements, dietary and lifestyle changes. Student volunteers were able experience the difficulties of language barrier first hand and those that were Korean bilingual were able to develop their interpersonal skills. This event has highlighted a need to screen this population as well as the younger population to prevent osteoporosis before it happens. The participants and coordinator were very enthusiastic and appreciative of our participation and hope to see us again next year!
