President's Corner

Happy 2016 everyone and welcome back for another exciting year at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy! My name is Christopher Andrews and I am privileged and excited to be serving as your ASCP-UW Student Chapter President this school year. Beginning a new year with this amazing organization is always an exhilarating time. What makes it exciting is that I will be able to work together with a wonderful group of students and faculty to help carry out the mission of ASCP within our school and local community.

This winter break has given me time to ponder the question of what our organization actually does for our students and community. During my time as a student member and President-elect of ASCP-UW over the past couple years, I have seen how this organization has lived up to its name by enhancing the quality of care for all older persons by playing our role as student pharmacists and promoting healthy aging. Two pinnacles of our service come through outreach and education. Our organization, throughout its many years of being involved with the School of Pharmacy, has orchestrated a tremendous amount of brown bag medication reviews, osteoporosis screenings, and educational lectures in the hopes of providing a service to our student members and geriatric citizens in our local community. Putting together and participating in ASCP-UW events is so much more fun when it has a “we’re-in-this-together” feel. That is how this past quarter has felt and I look forward to carrying that momentum on for the rest of the school year.

Along with providing support to the geriatric population in our community, this organization focuses on the maturation and interests of its student members. As one of the many leaders of this amazing student organization, I invite you to provide any comments or suggestions to myself and the board so that we may better serve you and make your time as a member worthwhile and meaningful.

On behalf of the ASCP-UW board and all of our proud student members, I would like to gratefully thank and acknowledge our dedicated advisors, Dr. Joy Plein, Dr. Annie Lam, and Dr. Leigh Ann Mike for all of their support throughout this quarter, and continued support and encouragement in the future.

There is a quote I would like to leave you all with shared with me by one of my favorite professors to hopefully make you smile and promote that healthy aging:

“Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, you'll be a mile away from them, and you'll have their shoes.”

We look forward to serving you and serving along side you in the future. I hope you enjoy reading this quarter’s edition of The Next Generation in the new webpage format!
