How to Borrow and Return a Library Item

Whitewater and sea kayak trip coordinators have access to the keys to the club library.  To borrow an item, go to the club boathouse at a time a trip coordinator is there (such as before and after pool sessions or before and after trips) so the coordinator can open the cabinet.  In the library cabinet, there is an index card box containing circulation cards for every library item.  Although some attempt has been made to organize this box, you may have to search through the entire box to locate the card corresponding to your item.  Once you find the right card, write your name at the bottom of the list on the card along with the date you borrowed the item.  Then place the card back in the box and lock up the cabinet.

There is a chance the circulation card for your item will be missing.  In this case, make a new card for it (using the blank cards at the back of the box).

Please observe the following guidelines for acceptable periods of loan:

Videos, Charts, and Atlases: 1 week

Books and all other materials: 4 weeks

When you are ready to return the item, you will have to find a trip coordinator again to open the cabinet for you.  Put the item back in the cabinet, locate the circulation card, and note the date you returned the item on the card.

Thank you for following these guidelines!

What to do if the Item is on Loan to Someone Else

If you do not find the book or video you are looking for, it is most likely on loan to another club member.  Locate the circulation card and find who currently has the item and when he or she borrowed it.  The borrower is entitled to the have the item for the periods indicated above.  If the borrower still has the item past that period, the item is overdue.  Please contact the individual directly (if you do not know this person, e-mail the listserv to contact him or her) and request the item be returned as soon as possible.

If the item is missing altogether, or if you cannot reach the person with the item (or that person is unresponsive), please contact the club librarian, Victor Kress kress@geology.washington.edu.

How to Suggest New Materials for the Library

The club wants to stay up to date with all the latest cutting-edge kayaking books and videos.  At the same time, the club cannot buy every book or video on the market.  No one person is responsible for purchasing new items.  Instead, club members (usually trip coordinators) make a suggestion to the club librarian.  Assuming the club librarian and the treasurer agree on the new purchase, and there are no objections from the club's officers, club members can purchase the new material and get a reimbursement.

When you are ready to place a new item in the library, make sure to create a new circulation card for the item, and write "UKC" prominently on the item's cover in black ink.
