My name is Ridley, and I am a PhD student in Human-Centered Design and Engineering at the University of Washington.\u00a0 I am currently advised by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcde.washington.edu\/lee\">Charlotte Lee<\/a> and am also working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcde.washington.edu\/markh\">Mark Haselkorn<\/a>. Previous collaborators include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcde.washington.edu\/munson\">Sean Munson<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/garyhs\/\">Gary Hsieh<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/homes.cs.washington.edu\/~reinecke\/\">Katharina Reinecke<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I am currently seeking summer research and design internship opportunities. I am particularly capable at ethnographic methods and interviewing, with users and designers of technologies and in complex organizations.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am interested in a variety of subjects, including but not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 20px;\">\n<li>Complex infastructures and the &#8220;shadow systems&#8221; that get created to cope with their implementation<\/li>\n<li>Regional transit systems<\/li>\n<li>Science communication tools and strategies<\/li>\n<li>Resilience and remote working<\/li>\n<li>Ethical and conceptual issues with large-scale technological changes (e.g., how does childhood development change as social robots become ubiquitous? Is it possible to use value-sensitive design to create machine learning algorithms that &#8220;discipline and punish&#8221;?)<\/li>\n<li>New value-sensitive design methodologies<\/li>\n<li>New ideas and methods for usability.\u00a0 In particular, how does usability get evaluated when the &#8220;user&#8221; is an organization, with its own pressures and internal logic and where agency to make decisions on software isn&#8217;t evenly distributed?\u00a0 Check out a report I wrote on the subject <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1bRRpKOW0dqNSBlojXvlOIVOP_dy5v3eLVk_xoIp5pnE\/edit?usp=sharing\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 If you have thoughts on this, I&#8217;d love to hear from you!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In real life, I love prog rock, cooking, consuming and occasionally producing science fiction and poetry, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/CmzfLOCVIAAU9Mo.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my cat Cutieus Maximus<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello!
