He was courting Dame Fortune this whilom young man
"May I see you safe home charming one?"
"tis a Chilly-cut road, kind Sir," she replied,
but if you elect to Yu-kon.
He seized her fair arm, this wiskered young man,
"May I have you for aye, Charming one?"
"Dy-ea know, I must first ask my ma if I can,"
"Before I will know if Yu-kon."
They mosied together, this dashing young man,
And this dame he was sure he had won.
He stole a sweet kiss from under her fan.
"Repeat?" and she answered"Yu-kon."
Great castles he builded this amiable young man,
Then in soft whispers, "D'Juno?"
I'll build a large home on "Lake Washington"
Where I'll be sure to Tak-ou."
He reached for a kiss, this happy young man,
As before he'd repeatedly done.
Just then his pack mule, while eating corn,
Fell on the poor devil's shin bone.
Then did he wake, this modest young man,
And he found humself out on the Trail,
As down his poor back the melting snow ran:
The cuss words resounded like hail.
How many Klondikers, bright, cheerful young men,
Who are leaving fond mothers and home,
On waking will find Dame Fortune is gone,
Their visions of wealth but a dream.
