Astronomy Day

About

This is a digital flyer made especially for posting on Discord servers along with an announcement regarding the event. I took B PHYS 101 Introduction to Astronomy in Spring 2021, and Astronomy Day is the end-of-quarter event for that course, which involves getting as many people as possible to join a Zoom meeting and visit breakout rooms, each room a different topic in Astronomy. Our job as students were to engage our visitors so that they leave having learned something new about Astronomy.

Each team was told to have their own method of advertising the event, and this is what I have made as and for my five-person team for the event.

The Process

The Initial Plan

I've always been fascinated by the YouTube channel Kurzgesagt, especially by how they make their animations and illustrations — they're so solid and smooth, simple and complex at the same time, just so beautiful and high quality. Since they do a lot of videos about science and space, I immediately thought of this channel when hearing about the need to make a flyer. So their style is what I adapted into mine for fun.

The Approach

This was meant to be a quick drawing, so I didn't want to set up my whole drawing tablet and computer for this; instead, I just navigated to my art apps folder on my iPhone 11 Pro Max and tapped on ibisPaint X — my favorite mobile digital painting app.

I especially adapted the exact terrain shapes for the planets and sun, but I also love the result of the edge of the expanding universe part of the illustration; I think the waviness combined with the lineless edge creates a very dynamic spill.

The next part is to add the words into the flyer. I used Photopea to do so.

I should also mention upon adding text, I realized some emptiness between the components of the background, so I added sectional colored filters to crowd it up a bit. It also nicely emphasizes that all those things are thrown in together onto a poster context and that they do not exist that close in real space.

The End Result

I'm really happy with how it turned out. I think I found great matching fonts to go with the style.

What I Learned

This is a style I don't usually adapt, so it was surprising to see it still being in me.

My Next Steps

I would like to learn a more solid method of drawing in this style. I see people coming up with illustrations very very quickly on ProCreate, but I don't have an iPad. It still took me some weird techniques to get this look using the tools I have currently.
