So you want to be an element girl....
Wondering how you, too, can wear the shiny purple shorts? Sweet! We want to meet you! Read on and most of the questions swimming around in your head right now will be answered. You're about to learn more than you ever wanted to know about becoming part of the team.
But I've Never Played before!
Each year we add new players to the team. Some have played a little pickup, some have played for years, some have thrown occasionally in the park, and others have never played ultimate before in their lives. If you want to play ultimate, and are willing to put in a lot of effort, then there is a place for you on the team. Show up with cleats and enthusiasm, and leave the rest up to us. Miranda Roth, who played 4 years for Carleton College and one for UW, is returning for her second year as our head coach. Jenn Willson, who also co-captains Seattle Riot with Miranda, is our assistant coach. Jenn also played four years at Carleton and coached the University of Oregon Fugue before moving to Seattle.
How Do I find you?
Come out to practice! The best way to do that is to email the captains ( wwuf@u.washington.edu ), and they'll tell you where and when practices are or you can just check our calendar. You can just check out practice and watch, or get out there and play. The captains would also be happy to meet up on campus to toss and tell you about the team.
When is the best time to join?
The best answer is that Element recruits new people throughout the fall and has more competitive tryouts in the winter. Our practice schedule is less intense in the fall than the other seasons, and there are two local tournaments, Washington Sundodger/Element invite, and the Oregon Fall Ultimate Kickoff. These tournaments are competitive, but every team has lots of new players and you'll get a lot of playing time. These tournaments will get you hooked, no doubt.
So, fall is the time to try your hand at ultimate and see what you think. Practices and workouts get more intense during the winter and spring. That's when the college season really begins, with frequent tournaments, and things really start to get exciting. But no matter what time of the year it is, if you're interested in playing ultimate, come check us out.
