Washington Undergraduate Law Review

Submissions

The Washington Undergraduate Law Review (WULR) accepts submissions year-round.

Type of Articles

The WULR is an academic legal journal at the University of Washington that publishes law-related essays, research papers, and other written work by undergraduates. The law review is entirely run by undergraduates at the University of Washington. Thus, submission to the WULR is open to all majors. We value papers on a variety of legal topics, and students are encouraged to submit undergraduate theses or other academic papers. Submissions will be selected for publication by the WULR's executive editors based upon quality of writing, research, and analysis. All submissions accepted for publication may be edited for length and clarity.

File Format

Email articles as a Microsoft Word file (.doc or .docx) in double-spaced, 12 point type. Articles should include a cover page with the following information:

  1. Full name
  2. Contact information (email, phone)
  3. Article title
  4. Complete abstract
  5. Brief biography
  6. College / university

Citations

All citation styles commonly used by the humanities (Chicago, MLA, APA, Turabian, etc.) and legal literature (The Bluebook, The Maroonbook, ALWD, OSCOLA, etc.). Articles chosen for publication will be converted by WULR to conform with The Bluebook style guide. When citing sources, precision is expected. Authors must comprehensively cite all sources that are referred to, paraphrased, or directly quoted in their articles. Articles chosen for publication in the WULR will be converted so that they conform with The Bluebook style guide.

The WULR has a no-tolerance policy for plagiarism and academic dishonesty, and any submission found to contain plagiarism will be rejected. All submissions will be run through a plagiarism detector.

Bluebook Style Guide

The WULR employs The Bluebook, a style guide formulated by law review editors from Harvard University, Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University. First published in 1926, The Bluebook is currently in its 19th edition [ISBN - 9780615361161], and is available in university law libraries, for purchase online or in stores, and can be accessed through its own proprietary website.

A number of law libraries have developed online tools for authors to familiarize themselves with the Bluebook style:

  1. Georgetown Law Library: 'Bluebook Guide - Citing Cases'
  2. University of Washington Law Library: 'Bluebook 101'
  3. New England Law / Boston: 'Bluebooking Guide: Examples'
  4. Suffolk University Law School: 'A Bluebook Guide for Law Students'
