Rush is a time for girlS interested in joining SYZ to meet the active sisters and learn more about our sorority. This is your chance to ask any questions you ever had about SYZ, pledging, or sorority life in general. Rush is completely nonbinding. In other words, theres absolutely no pressure to commit to or join SYZ when you rush.
Every sistership conducts rush at east once a school year. Rho Charter conducts two rushes annually, during Fall and Spring Quarter. Our rush period is two weeks. All of Sigma Psi Zetas rush events are dry.
During this time, we hold a variety of events to provide an overview of our organization; of what we do, who we are, and get to know each sisters of Sigma Psi Zeta. If you decided to participate, you become a rushee. No commitments or promise are made during the rush, so relax, and just have a good time! This is also a time for us to get to know YOU, so come on out and play!
Rho Charter requires interested girls in joining SYZ to attend a certain number of Rush events. To be eligble for a bid, rushees must attend at least one General Interest Meeting (GIM) and two rush events of choice. After rush, Rho Charter will invite rushees who have met the rush requirements for an interview. SYZ does require a minimum GPA of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale and you must not be a member of another general national college sorority.
At the end of the rush process, sisterships will extend BIDS, an invitation to join SYZ. If you receive and accept this bid,the pledging process will begin soon after
It's an official invitation for individuals to become a member of our sorority. You have the choice to accept or decline our offer. When accepting the bid, one is required to follow through a pledge process.
During this time, pledges participate in activities that build leadership and sisterhood with their fellow pledge sisters and the active sisters. The entire process of pledging is dry. Sigma Psi Zeta strictly follows the University and our own National rules against hazing and the mistreatment of pledges.
This is an Asian-interest sorority. Are non-Asians allowed to join?
Absolutely! The Sisters of Sigma Psi Zeta would like to emphasize that we are an Asian-Interest sorority, not Asian-exclusive. We encorage all ethnicities who believe in our mission to rush. Our sisters come from all cultures, including but not limited to Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Filipino, Thai, Laos, African American, Indian, Italian, Latina and Caucasian. In fact, 10 percent of the sisters are of non-Asian decent.
It's FUN and completely NONBINDING. We are really excited to meet you and we have a lot of fun activities planned. A little intimidated? You are always welcome to bring a friend!
Will rushing other sororities hurt a rushee's chance of getting a bid?
Absolutely not. We encourage all interested girls to search carefully for a sorority that can meet their needs. The more information you gather, the better able you are able to make an informed decision.
What can I expect from the "typical" Sigma sister?
There is no "typical" Sigma sister. Sisterhood is not a mold for women to fit into. Nor does it make each sister who they are. Each sister contributes her talent, idealism, devotion and energies to the greater organization, giving our sisterhood the character it has today. We hope that each sister will change our sisterhood, helping it to grow and evolve.
Sigma Psi Zeta National enforces a strict non-hazing policy. Our organization's national philanthropy is "to combat the violence against women." With this in mind, we are against the disrespect of women in all its myriad forms. The purpose of pledging is to help stimulate a bond between the members of a pledge class and the sisters that have already been initiated. It is a challenge and a commitment during which trust is placed in both the pledges and the sisters. Subsequently, we do not mentally, physically or emotionally degrade our pledges. To do so would work against the ties of loyalty, allegiance and dedication that we aim to create. Please refer to our policies on risk management and hazing for more information.
Does Sigma Psi Zeta have a brother fraternity?
Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc. does not have a brother fraternity. As a sorority that prizes strong, independent women, we have made a deliberate choice to remain unaffiliated with another Greek organization.
How is SYZ different from other sororities?
Generally speaking, all sororities are pretty similar. Every sorority works hard to support a national philanthropy, has their own history, contributes to their community, and offers social activities. However, the main difference between SYZ and any sorority, Asian-interest or non-Asian, is the women in the organization. When choosing a sorority to rush or pledge, the most important factor should be how comfortable you feel and how well you get along with the sisters. Ask yourself, do you feel relaxed while chatting with them? Can you see yourself hanging out with them in the future? If the answer is YES, you should definitely consider joining! After all, sisterhood lasts beyond pledging and even beyond college. It lasts for a lifetime.
