About Us

The fundamental goal of Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority is to promote awareness of the myriad Asian/Asian-American cultures. Our sorority addresses this issue through leadership, outreach, individual, community interaction, and most importantly, the bonds of sisterhood.

The sorority also promotes development among its members, the students and the faculty at each of the campuses we represent. In order to achieve this goal, we partake in political, social, educational, and cultural activities. Each effort improves our environment, and instills within our sisters experiences that will follow them long after they've graduated. Through a network of like-minded yet highly individualistic women, the sorority lends structure and support to sororities that share this Sigma vision. We believe the strength of our foundation derives from the unity of sisterhood, one that was proudly established years ago.

In addition, we work in collaboration with other Greek and non-Greek organizations to provide services for the local communities and the community at large. It is through our various participations in these cultural events, educational workshops, and philanthropic support that we make a difference. Nationally, regionally, and individually, we strive to embody the ideals of Sigma Psi Zeta.

In the summer of 2003, eight courageous women, Maki Hanamoto, Mizuki Asano, Tiffany Ng, Marcella Freeman, Sarra Kim, Jinhee Pyo, Grace Lim and Linda Lim came together to form an interest group for Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority Inc.

These women dedicated themselves to establish a sisterhood that would empower women, provide cultural awareness and services to our local community and the communities at large. On a crisp day of November 22, 2003 in Seattle, Washington, the eight proud girls of University of Washington were formally recognized as Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority's Rho Charter, one of the first to be established on the west coast.

History

On March 23, 1994, Sigma Psi Zeta was founded at the University at Albany, State University of New York. The founding mothers of Sigma Psi Zeta aimed to establish an organization that encompassed the strength of today’s Asian-American woman and her potential for making an impact on the world around her. Coming together as friends, they decided that they wanted to initiate change and agreed to create an organization on the First Asian Interest Sorority to originate in the East Coast.

Sigma Psi Zeta has since grown to embody the beliefs of our Founding Mothers. We have become a sorority celebrating our cultural experiences. The multicultural activities in which we participate increase our awareness of the multitude of cultures that have contributed to our history. Our philanthropic activities in which we engage increase our understanding of the timeless struggles that were faced by minority women everywhere. Today, we have expanded to 9 chapters, 11 charters, 3 colonies, and going strong.
