Many members of SLAP at the UW have met with women from two of the only unionized garment factories in Guatemala, Cimatextiles and Choishin. When the owners of Cimatextiles and Choishin threatened to close the factories in order to bust up the unions over the past six months, SLAP teamed up with the UW Guatemala Project to raise awareness about the plight of the Guatemalan workers. The UW Guatemala Project is currently waging a campaign to pressure US apparel brands that source from Cimatextiles and Choishin, including Liz Claiborne, Talbots, and Macy's, to take action and stop the targeted discrimination of workers in two of the only unionized factories in their supply chain. A lot of people ask UW SLAP where they can buy "sweatshop-free" and Fair Trade goods. In response, we are directing people to an online sweat-free/Fair Trade shopping guide that has been compiled by Sweatshop Watch, SweatFree Communities, and the International Labor Rights Forum. All of the products in this guide are made by workers who are either organized into democratic unions, or worker-owned cooperatives. You can view the guide online here.
