Graduation
Graduation will be held on Sunday, June 12th at 2:30 pm in Meany Hall. Tickets
Each student is guaranteed 4 tickets. People without tickets can watch live video feed of the ceremony in Kane Hall. We have a reserve of extra tickets. More information will be provided later in the quarter regarding the procedure that will be used to allocate these extra tickets. You can begin picking up your graduation tickets from Francis Timlin in Room 385 on Monday, May 9. YOU MUST PICK UP YOUR GRADUATION TICKETS BY FRIDAY, MAY 20. IEveryone gets four tickets, but if you want more, you will be asked to place your name on a list. Beginning May 23, we will distribute the extra tickets as equitably as possible. Announcements
You are personally responsible for ordering announcements, if you want them. To order them, go to http://www.jostens.com. Click "Shop Online! It's Easy!" Then click on "College & Post-High School". Select "Washington", "Seattle" and "University of Washington". Then select "personalized announcements". This is where you get to pick the package that you want. After selecting your package, select "Juris Doctor" under degree. Under "ceremony text", select the first button which starts "The Faculty and Graduating Class of University of Washington..." Then under "date, time and place", select the one that says, "Two Thousand Five, Sunday afternoon, June twelfth,two-thirty o'clock,Meany Hall". You can also order invitations over the phone. Every student MUST register for graduation via the UW main commencement website by May 22! This is also where you can order caps/gowns and parking passes. This website is NOT how you donate to the law school class gift. You will be asked if you want to donate to the class of 2005 class gift, but this is for the general university gift, not the law school gift. Student Speaker
If you want to be one a student speaker at graduation, email a one paragraph blurb (no more than 150 words) to Emily Fountain [ejf@u.washington.edu] and Dinah Choi [dinahlc@u.washington.edu] by WEDNESDAY, MAY 18. Your statement should include your name and the reason why you want to be a speaker. These statements will then be submitted for a class-wide vote on Catalyst for selection of the speaker(s). We are pleased to announce that the 3L class has chosen Dale Minami as its graduation speaker. Dale Minami is a partner with Minami, Lew and Tamaki in San Francisco, and specializes in personal injury and entertainment law. He received a B.A. in 1968 with Honors in Political Science from the University of Southern California and graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. He received his J.D. in 1971 from Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California. Mr. Minami was a co-founder of the Asian Law Caucus, Inc. a co-founder of the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area, the Asian Pacific Bar of California and the Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans. He has been involved in significant litigation involving the civil rights of Asian Pacific Americans and other minorities, including Korematsu v. United States, a lawsuit to overturn a 40 year old conviction for refusal to obey exclusion orders aimed at Japanese Americans during WWII, originally upheld by US Supreme Court in landmark decisions, and Spokane JACL v. Washington State University, a class action on behalf of Asian Pacific Americans to establish an Asian American Studies program at Washington State University. Mr. Minami has also received appointments to public commissions and agencies, including the California Fair Employment and Housing Commission, the California Attorney General's Asian Pacific Advisory Committee, the State Bar=s Commission on Judicial Nominee's Evaluation, Senator Barbara Boxer's Judicial Screening Committee. Mr. Minami was appointed by President Clinton as Chair of the Civil Liberties Public Education Fund in January, 1996. Currently, Mr. Minami serves on the Board of Kristi Yamaguchi's Always Dream Foundation and the Advisory Board of the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation. He has also taught at U.C. Berkeley and Mills College in Oakland. In recognition of his achievements, Mr. Minami has received numerous awards including the American Bar Association's 2003 Thurgood Marshall Award, the 2003 ACLU Civil Liberties Award, and Spirit of Excellence Award. 3L Congratulatory Luncheon featuring former Governor Gary Locke
When: May 24, 2005 (Tuesday) 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM The Law School Alumni Association is pleased to invite all 3L students, faculty and alumni to a complimentary luncheon in honor of our graduating class. Shuttles to Husky Stadium will begin loading from outside the main entrance to William H. Gates Hall at 11:30 a.m. and will return guests to the School of Law in time for 1:30 p.m. classes.
