2012 PNKF/AUSKF Membership

The deadline for the 2012 PNKF/AUSKF membership is coming up soon! The membership is not mandatory, but you won’t be eligible to participate in tournaments (excluding our annual UW tournament which you must attend), apply for shinsa, or practice at neighboring dojo without doing so. For those of you who are already members, you still need sign up anyways to renew your membership for this year.

Applying is easy! Simply take the following steps:

1. Fill out the spreadsheet.
2. Print out the application and bring it to us before or after practice. Make sure you fill out both pages.
3. Bring the fee of $70 to Eric or Grant.

If can follow these steps by the deadline, February 6th, then you’re all set!

UWKC Mailing List

A number of people have mentioned after practice that they aren’t getting club emails due to not being on the club mailing list.

Being subscribed to the mailing list is vital, as it’s one of the club’s main tools for getting announcements out there, especially since we only meet twice a week, not everybody can make it to hear announcements in person, and it gives us a way to notify people of things in advance instead of having to wait until the next practice. Plus it’s nice to have everything saved electronically.

To sign up, visit this page.

You can log in using your UW NetID to subscribe, a personal email, or both. There is also a section where you can enter your email address and change your individual settings (to unsubscribe from the list, for example). Please don’t contact us about unsubscribing from the list, as that task is completely automated on the website and we can’t manually modify the list for you.

Saturday Welcoming Party.

Hey guys! Just a reminder that this Saturday, Marsten-sensei has graciously offered to host a party for all of us at her house. We start at 7 pm, and you’re going to want to make sure to eat dinner beforehand, because we’ll only have light snacks. .

Marsten-sensei has also asked that when you get there, you go up the driveway and enter through the deck rather than the front door.
There will be some exciting activities for you to take part in, and it will also be a chance for you to discover how much fun we kendo people are when we’re not attacking you with sticks. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or to just ask at practice on Friday. See you all there!

Interested in trying Kendo?

Welcome Fall Quarter 2011 UW students! I noticed you guys think Kendo is pretty awesome. If you want to give it a shot, beginners classes are starting for the Fall Quarter. Here’s what you need to know for getting started:

-You don’t need any Kendo or martial arts experience. (If you have done Kendo before, talk to someone).
-Bring $40 on the first day. $15 are for the quarterly club dues and $25 are for the wooden sword.
-Wear whatever you want, but you probably want to wear something comfortable. Sports shorts, T shirts, sweats, whatever. If you’ll wear it to basketball you’re probably fine.

That’s about it, honestly. You don’t need to know how to speak Japanese or the samurai code of honor, just show up and we’ll take care of the rest.

If you want to know more about Kendo before you start, we have a pretty extensive FAQ and Wikipedia can tell you about Kendo in general.

Other than that, we’ll see you in the Fall.

Camping Trip

Memorial Day Weekend is quickly approaching which means it’s time to start thinking about our yearly trip! I’m sure many of you have already heard lots of stories, but for those of you new to the club, we go out to the Marsten Property for two days and one night for some camping/machete hiking/drunk hide & seek fun. Oh, did I forget to mention there are glo-sticks?

We are very fortunate that Marsten sensei lets us use his property for this trip. The only thing he asks in return is that we do some clean-up before hand. Every year it gets a little overgrown, so we go out there with Marsten sensei and clear roads, do some weeding and trimming, and DO NOT cut down the huckleberry bushes. We need people to go up a week before and help with this. Tools are provided, though I suggest you bring work gloves if you have them. The more people we have, the less time it will take. (And those of you who don’t some to clean-up get to clean-up camp before we leave!)

The sign-up can be found HERE. Note there are different tabs for clean-up and camping trip. Please sign-up for the clean-up trip by the 19th so we can work out carpools. The deadline for the camping trip sign-up will be MAY 23RD so we can organize carpools and buy the appropriate amount of supplies. Make sure you note whether you can drive up there and whether or note you have a tent you can bring. And please note, this is only for current UWKC members.

Lastly, there is another tab if you have any reasonable requests for food and/or drink. Ken will taking donations for fancy cocktail drinks, so send him an email @ loeu.is.lu @ gmail.com those requests and give him monies.

If there are any questions, let me know. In the mean time, I will be making up brackets for kendo beer pong.
