The Sports and Fitness Class is a 12 to 14 lesson introductory class that teaches the basic forms and moves, a simple kata (a series of moves linked together), and some basic forms of sparring. Fees are $35 payable to the University of Washington upon registration at the IMA. Students completing the Sports and Fitness Class can sign up to join the Shotokan Karate Club.

Instructor

The instructor for the Sports and Fitness Class is a typically a black belt member of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA). Current instructor and those who have taught in the past include -

Assignment

There are two homework assignments for this class. First, please memorize all of the Japanese terms in the list below, as we get to them. You will be required to count to 10 in Japanese in front of the whole class by the end of the second class. Second, please memorize the order of the moves in the kata before the start of the fourth class.

Counting in Japanese

We traditionally count in Japanese when performing drills. Students are expected to
have memorized the count from 1 to 10 by the beginning of the second week of class.

   0.  Stand in natural stance with hands as fists.

  1. Turn to your left and execute a left down block.
  2. Step forward and execute a right front punch.
  3. Turn 180 degrees to your right and execute a right down block. While turning, keep the back (left) foot in place, swinging the right foot around.
  4. Step forward and execute a left front punch.
  5. Turn 90 degrees to your left and execute a left down block. While turning, keep the back (right) foot in place, swinging the left foot around.
  6. Step forward and execute a right front punch.
  7. Step forward and execute a left front punch
  8. Step forward and execute a right front punch (kiai at this point)
  9. Turn 270 degrees to your left and execute a left down block. While turning, keep the front (right) foot in place, swinging the left foot around.
