Welcome to the UW Shotokan Karate Club! As a new member, here are some things you should know about:

Joining the Club

• Sign up for the mailing lists
• Buy the book Karate-do Kyohan
• Sign up to become an SKA member by filling out the membership form (talk to your seniors to get the login and password).
• Keep on eye on the Attendance Spreadsheet
• Familiarize yourself with the main SKA webpage, in particular the Members Area and the Training Calendar page to know what basics and katas are the focus of each month (talk to your seniors to get the login and password).
• Occasionally check (or subscribe to) the club events calendars on our events page
• If you are a brown belt or a black belt, attend the senior practices on Sundays (schedule can be found here)

Buying gi, handpads, mouth guards, etc.

You can buy a karate gi at most martial arts stores. Depending on the size, a light weight gi costs $20-$30, a medium one costs $30-$40 and a heavy one costs $50-$60. These stores usually also sell handpads and mouth guards. One such store is:

Another option is to buy these things online at stores such as www.centuryfitness.com (apparently the same as www.centuryma.com), www.karatesupply.com, www.karate-mart.com, and www.bujindesign.com. It might be a good idea to first call or email them to make sure you are getting the right thing.
