UBC Self-Defense Clinic
UBC dojo is pleased to announce that Kurt Goessman will lead a self-defence workshop at UBC on Saturday March 8th from 11:30 to 5:30. Kurt is a sandan with Canada Shotokan Karate and is a Sergeant with the BC Sheriff Service. He has considerable expertise in the application of self-defence techniques.
This workshop is run through Recreation UBC and therefore is open to the public and not limited to members of CSK/SKA. There is a limit of 35 people in the UBC dojo, so if you plan on participating or simply watching you should register as soon as possible to secure a spot. UBC will not allow any drop-ins (even observers) if the limit of 35 people is reached. The cost is $22.50 for the public, $18 for UBC students, and free for anyone currently registered in RecUBC Shotokan Karate.
The registration information will indicate the time is 1:30 to 5:30, but the real start time is 11:30 (the normal start time for UBC dojo Saturday practice).
Additional Details: Bring snacks and water as we will need a break or two in the afternoon Minimum age for participation is 18 Do not wear a gi, but instead wear comfortable workout clothes Depending on the number of participants, it is possible that not every person will be able to participate in every drill.
The UBC dojo is in the Studio inside the Student Recreation Centre.
Note: The weekend of March 8-9th is when the UBC annual triathlon event is happening. I would recommend accessing UBC Campus via University Blvd (i.e., west 10th Ave) because both 16th Ave and Marine Drive will be closed off.
Parking is available in the parkade across from the Student Recreation Centre just past Walter Gage Towers residence.
The Spring Kyu test in the Seattle area will be held on April 20th at the Dance Fremont Studio. Doors will open at approximately 9:40am, please be changed and ready to begin at 10:am sharp.
For those who will be testing, review the Kyu Test portion of the Activities page understand expectations. Talk to your dojo leaders or club officers if you have any questions regarding the kyu test.
You must be a currently registered member of Shotokan Karate of America in order to participate in grading. Remember, the kyu test is taken only at the invitation of your dojo leaders.
Spring Quarter Sports & Fitness Class
Registration for the Sports & Fitness Karate class begins on March 24th! This class is and excellent opportunity to be introduced to our particular style of karate, and an great opportunity to get to know our club members. Classes typically begin in the thrid week of the quarter and continue to the end of the quarter.

France Shotokan's 50th Anniversary
Shotokan Karate of America is closely associated with similar organizations in many countries around the world, who are also dedicated to preserving and passing on the traditional teachings of Masters Gichin Funakoshi and Tsutomu Ohshima. Our friends in France will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of their founding, and invite all Ohshima Shotokan Karateka to join in the festivities.
