Named after the iconic Seattle coffee shop that introduced the United States to latte art, 2017’s Vivace featured coffee bean outlays on the exterior and espresso swirls on the inside. Like an artist perfecting a latte design, the 2017 team focused on improving from past knowledge and using challenges as opportunities to learn.
Vivace was built using a male mold and featured 1,500 lbs of post-tensioning. The canoe measured 20 feet in length and weighed 390 lbs.
The team took first place at the regional competition hosted by Boise State University, advancing to nationals at Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO. At Nationals, the team took 12th place overall, with 7th in the design paper, 12th in the oral presentation, and 10th in final product.
