Wonderful Wenatchee Overnighter

Lots-o-snow + finally-not-cold-weather = too_much_water.

Most rivers are too big right now for any good paddling with one exception: mother-flipping WENATCHEE. Who wants to go play?

Leave Friday afternoon or Saturday morning of the 20th/21st, come back 22nd Sunday night.

The Wenatchee: The only reason to cross the Cascades. Class III, big water, some of the best playboating in this state. Great place to learn how to surf, and great first class III for most boaters. Nothing is really difficult, just massive, roller-coaster like waves that you simply float over. No rock dodging, no surprise holes, no hostile mermaids with tridents. But like I said, big water. The river is wide and moves fast, so swimming is quite a hassle (though not at all dangerous). Cuz of that, I'm going to have to require a roll in the pool/lake. But it's crazy fun. And WARM (I guess the sun is another reason to make the easterly trek).

Because I'm requiring a roll and I want to include as many people as possible, I'll try to hold some small group roll sessions the week after finals for those interested. I make my own work hours so I'm flexible.

If you are a lake member and you'd like to go on the trip you will need to upgrade your membership to lake/sea. You can do that by filling out this form and taking it to the HUB Ticket Office. The $30 charge pays only for your American Canoe Association membership, which is our insurance coverage.

So if you're interested, RSVP to me - myork@u. with this info:
* Can you roll? It's ok if no, we can work on it the week before.
* What's your favorite aspect of math?
* Car availability including rack, mileage, # of seats
* Cell number
* Can you leave Friday afternoon? What time?
* Have you ever started a fist fight?

If you can answer any of those in Haiku, I give you first pick on a boat.

SK-II sea trip Sunday May 25, hopefully gray whales

A few gray whales typically spend much of the spring feeding in the waters near Camano Island (see http://www.orcanetwork.org/sightings/map.html for recent sighting reports). There is a good chance that if we put in at Camano Island State Park and travel south that we will encounter them, if they do not leave in the next few days. This should be an easy trip, 6 to 8 miles at a slow pace, possibly crossing Saratoga Passage to the town of Langley if conditions are light. Approximate schedule would be: meet at WAC at 9 AM, return 4 to 5 PM.

As with any sea trip away from the lake, you must meet these conditions:
a. Be a current club member
b. Have done a sea kayak rescue session within the last year
c. Be a current ACA member (you can quickly renew on-line, if needed)

If you are interested, please reply to me, w a g e n@u.washi... (remove the spaces and complete the domain manually), with the following info:
1. If you meet a-c above
2. If you need a rescue session, could you do it Thursday night @ 6:00? That would be the best night for me.
3. Would you be willing to lead a rescue session, so I don't have to or on another day if not everyone can come on Thursday? If you have done it once or twice before and were paying attention, you can do this!
4. Do you have a car with a rack for boats, or a car that can take the club's rack?

Whitewater May 4

Hey hey hey, you Monkeys,

I (Matt) and Jeff will be leading a beginner trip this Sunday after the pool session. River levels are a little bipolar, so we won't be picking one until the last minute. BUT, it will be a super beginner trip. Given that, going to the pool session can only help you out, and people at the pool session get first picks on boats.

So I'm lazy - the rest of this is copied from a previous post, though it still holds true:

If you are a lake member and you'd like to go on the trip you will need to upgrade your membership to lake/sea. You can do that by filling out this form and taking it to the HUB Ticket Office. The $30 charge pays only for your American Canoe Association membership, which is our insurance coverage.

So if you're interested, RSVP to me - myork@u. with this info:
* Paddling experience, if any (most people for this trip probably won't have any)
* Can you roll?
* Your favorite breakfast food that contains no bread
* Car availability
-Rack?
-Number of seats
* Cell number
* What you think the most ridiculous animal is

Note: All asterisks points are required.

If there are any changes, I will announce them to the whitewater email list (ukc-ww). If you are not on the list or are unsure if you are, just add yourself by clicking here and filling out the info.

Word. I'm stoked. You should be too. Soon you will become a star of the Paddle Porn.

Important for all members: email lists

Most announcements of club activities are by the email lists ukc-all, ukc-ww or ukc-sea. When you joined the club, you should have been added to at least one of these, but often, errors are made either because your writing was ambiguous, or simply due to a typo. In that case you will get no club information!! This will seriously limit your participation.

Except in mid-winter, all members should expect to get at least a few messages from the club lists each month. If you joined the club recently, you should have got a "welcome" message automatically. If you are not getting any club email, you should contact me (remove spaces and generally make that into a real address) to add your address to the lists. Please do not ask to be added to the list if you are not a current club member.

Come be cold and miserable: Class II or III trip, Sunday, April 20th

The long term forecast is calling for rain, snow, and a high of 47 degrees on Sunday. Let's go paddle.

Depending upon interest we'll do either the Main Skykomish (class III), Big Eddy on the Skykomish (class II+) or Powerhouse (class II, appropriate for complete beginners).

This announcement is to gauge interest. Let me know if you're interested, which runs you'd like to do, and if Saturday is a better day.

In the mean time, here's an unrelated photo from the glorious spring weather we had last Saturday (please note, this photo depicts activities not sanctioned by the UKC)

Marina Trip Sunday 3/2

Hello everyone! How about this for a thought? Finals are coming, or a long continuous work jealous of the weather... Well. how about a trip?

We will start a trip from the WAC through the Hiram locks, along the shores and bluffs of Discovery park/Magnolia and ending on the other side in Magnolia's marina. The plan is to meet at the WAC this Sunday 3/2, 8:30am and back at the WAC, 3pm. The trip is little over 10nm, but very scenic. Newbies are welcomed, but we'll have to sort something out in regards to doing a rescue practice.

All else, if interested please email me, not the list at lleung@u. Please include:
***car availability?
***car rack or not? ***number of seats?
***completed a rescue practice in the last year?

Please note that due to weather conditions, this event may be canceled and scheduled for another date, so if you're interested on being short-listed, please email me as well.

Thanks and hope all interested and available ones could make it out.

Class II Trip March 8

Yo!

Time to get on the mother flipping river.

Chris Saunders and Matt York will be leading a Class II trip on the Snoqualmie River Saturday March 8. It's the section of the river called Powerhouse - the put-in is right at the base of the ever-gorgeous Snoqualmie Falls. For those who don't know the rating system, Class II is the next step above ripples - perfect for people who have no river experience. There are still a few small play features, so more experienced paddlers can have some fun as well.

Here's some splendid info on this section courtesy of American Whitewater.

The current plan is to gather at the WAC at 9:00 am on Saturday March 8th. Note this is subject to change, depending on water levels, spontaneous fire-breathing dragon attacks, etc. We'll spend probably an hour fitting everyone into their gear, head out to the river which is about a 45 minute drive, romanticize in the glory of Snoqualmie falls, and hit the rapids. We'll spend time in the first rapid going over basic river skills until people are feeling solid, and then head down river. The run is a wee little run (relatively), so we can either take it slow and play around on the rapids, or we can do multiple runs.

* Paddling experience, if any (most people for this trip probably won't have any)
* Can you roll?
* A secret talent of yours
* Car availability
-Rack?
-Number of seats
* Cell number
* Your opinion on Britney Spears

Note: All asterisks points are required.

If there are any changes, I will announce them to the whitewater email list (ukc-ww). If you are not on the list or are unsure if you are, just add yourself by clicking here and filling out the info.

Duh... yea. I uber encourage going to the pool session this Sunday. I (Matt) will be there helping people with their rolls and going over basic river techniques.

Word. I'm stoked. You should be too. Soon you will become a star of the Paddle Porn.
