Salmon Trip Recap
TriBeta's trip down to Cavanaugh Pond was a big success!  We shuttled down with 19 people, learned about salmon, the watershed, Seattle's water supply, and then some of the hungry adventurers capped off the day with a stop by Dairy Queen to get energy boosts from blizzards!

For those who weren't able to make it, or those who want to relive the experience through film, pictures from the trip will be up soon.  (If you happen to have gone and wish for your pictures to be featured on this site, simply send us an email with them attached at tribeta@u.washington.edu .)

We here at TriBeta want to extend a big thank you both to those who chose to attend, and to the biology department's own Barbara Owens for giving such a great tour at the pond!  Thanks everybody!

October 14th, 2005

Online signups for the Cedar River trip are no longer active. Email tribeta@u.washington.edu to see about last minute addition!

October 10th, 2005

Come watch the annual salmon run up the Cedar River to Cavanaugh Pond and Landsburg !
When:  October 15, 2005 (This Saturday @ 11am)

We'll leave Hitchcock Hall at 11am and arrive at Cavanaugh Pond around Noon.  Meet up with us on campus or at the site. We'll then return to campus around 4 or 5pm depending on traffic and whether people want to stop to get food or not.

All faculty, students and staff are welcome!

(Note:
if you are having difficulties with the javascript signup, just email tribeta@u.washington.edu with Salmon Trip as the subject and your name and email.  Thanks!)

Barbara Owens, our very own naturalist at the Biology Advising office will tell us all about the natural and human history of the river and the life cycle and needs of the returning salmon. She will also give us a tour of the pond and the trap where some fish are removed for the hatchery.

Why visit Landsburg with naturalist Janet Germeraad?
It's part of the watershed that is closed to all humans and this is a special opportunity to see the site while being escorted by trained naturalists.  See the dam and the exact location where drinking water to over 1 million Seattlites is siphoned off from the river and diverted into your home.  See the high-tech salmon sorting ladder- in only its third year of operation - complete with a fish escalator, aka pescalator, where Chinook and Coho are allowed into the watershed to spawn but Sockeye, due to thier large numbers, are returned downstream.  See the new computerized filters that get out the "chewy chunks" from your drinking water and witness the giant toothbrushes that automatically clean the filters.  See the old filter house, which is listed on the National Historic Registry.

Hope to see you there!
