"Tashi delek!" (a Tibetan greeting)

Welcome to Students for a Free Tibet at the University of Washington. We are a group of students who work to increase awareness of Tibet's current situation, to promote Tibet's independence, and to share and preserve the history and culture of Tibet. Our Students for a Free Tibet group is one of over 650 chapters worldwide.

Founded in 1994, Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) is an international grassroots organization comprised of students and youth which organize, educate and act with the Tibetan people to end China's occupation of Tibet. It is the goal of SFT to develop leadeship skills amongst its members and train the next generation of social activists.

SFT at the University of Washington, in Seattle, was founded in response to Ven. Palden Gyatsola's visit to our campus on June 26th, 1996. That special evening, he expressed Tibet's critical need for global awareness of Tibet's plight for independence. In both October 2002 and May 2003 he returned to the University district to share his message of concern for the people of Tibet.

This awareness must start with the youth of today. Thus it is a goal to make our fellow students more aware of Tibet's situation and take action to prevent the elimination of Tibet's unique culture from China's current military occupation.
