The beachs of St. Paul are the breeding grounds for the Northern fur seal. This is the location in Rudyard Kipling's "The White Seal;" not the idyllic site found, but the "Lukannon" fled from. Now the rookeries are protected from commercial harvest and the population is monitored by the National Marine Mammal Laboratory. The first image is of a female, the second of a male.
