SYLAW (Street Youth Legal Advocates of Washington) provides
legal representation, information and education to the homeless and at-risk
youth population of Seattle. Representation services are provided by law
students working in conjunction with an attorney at Columbia Legal Services.
Who SYLAW Serves:
SYLAW primarily serves youth under 21 who are homeless or
at-risk of becoming homeless.
Scope of Services:
SYLAW provides legal services in civil cases only. No
services are provided for criminal issues. Primarily SYLAW seeks to help
youth with education, employment, housing, and public entitlements. For
example:
works with DSHS
barriers to employment
DSSI
CHINS petitions
emancipation
truancy / education issues
public assistance denials (TANF, food stamps)
barriers to housing
