How We Can Help

Do you work for a social service provider?

SYLAW and the Northwest Women's Law Center's Young Women and the Law Program have teamed up.  As two programs with similar goals, educating at-risk youth about their legal rights, we have decided to join forces in an effort to
more effectively disseminate this information.

SYLAW (Street Youth Legal Advocates of Washington) is a project
which provides at-risk youth, male and female, with legal education and
representation.  While SYLAW offers education on all areas of law, including
criminal law, it confines its representation to issues concerning civil law.
Specific areas covered by SYLAW workshops include criminal justice,
employment law, child welfare, family law, access to state and federal
entitlements, housing, immigration and health care.
Young Women and the Law provides legal education to at-risk  young
women (though young men are also welcome to attend), focusing on young
women's issues, in the Puget Sound area.  The program covers such diverse
subjects as Public Benefits for Teens (TANF, WorkFirst), parental control
legislation, health care, gender discrimination (including sexual harassment
and discrimination based on sexual orientation, and family issues such as
paternity, child support and parenting plan issues.
Our goal is to form long term partnerships with several agencies in the area
which are interested in having a speaker from one of our programs on a
regular basis.  (i.e. once a month, twice a month, once a quarter, etc.) If
your agency has any at-risk youth groups meeting on a regular basis, would
like to start such a group, or serves this population in some other way and
is looking for legal education, please think about incorporating our
service.
