The Benefits of Sports
Introduction
The benefits of sports are undeniable. No matter what age, size or gender you are you will always gain something from practicing sports. Obviously the degree to which a person is able to engage himself or herself in a certain sporting activity will vary depending on the age and other incapacitating circumstances. However, there are only very few people that are indeed completely incapable of deriving some benefit from sports. Sports doesn’t always have to be about running around until you are exhausted or being part of a team like a hockey team and running the risk of being injured by a person from the other sports team. Indeed the exercises you have to do during sports might also be quite gentle but still provide you with huge benefits.
Be physically active and play sports!
The real benefits of practicing sports and being physically active really go beyond the simple idea of “keeping fit”. Of course the most important reason for encouraging people to play sports and be physically active is to get them fit in the first place or to improve their fitness. So while the primary benefit of sports is to get fit being proactive in a sport will also bring other benefits to you and your well-being. No matter if you want to get fit, maintain or improve your level of fitness what you will have to do in most cases is to address what you eat and your weight. When exercising people tend to re-evaluate their diet and become more weight conscious and are determined to avoid obesity – this is another vital benefit of sports.
The combination of an increased level of exercise as well as a more healthy and balanced diet makes people more aware of their whole life-style and this will improve their whole sense of well-being. But thee are many other positive benefits of sports that are known and proven. Those benefits include: a reduced risk of hypertension and coronary disease, an increased stamina, suppleness and strength, an improved self-esteem and a reduced level of stress at work. In western society two of those factors, namely hypertension and obesity. Are amongst the biggest killers- Therefore anyone who is currently not physically active should find out more about the benefits of sports and start to practice sports on a regular basis because of that.
Benefit from sports at any age
Generally sports can be broadly categorized into team sports and individual sports as well as contact and non-contact sports. However, there are no hard and fast rules on this. Generally speaking it can be said that the older people become the less inclined the less able and inclined they are to participate in individual contact sports. An example for this type of sports would be boxing and an example for contact team sports would be football. Young people best enjoy contact and physically demanding team sports, but having reached a certain age you might no longer feel prepared and ready to practice a sport like that. This doesn’t mean you have to stop participating in a strenuous sport or form of physical exercise. What you need to do is find a new sport that is equally demanding but is without physical contact. There are lots of sports that fit this description such as racquet sports like tennis or squash, road-running, cycling, horse riding and so on. The list of these sports is really quite endless.
Go for non-contact team sports if you are a mature player
As mentioned previously when people get older they stop enjoying being involved in contact sports. This doesn’t mean that you can’t practice a team sport. There are lots of team sports that demand a high level of fitness and still lack the element of “contact” thereby being perfectly suited for more mature players. One team game that is fast moving and requires lots of fitness and is open to men and women is basketball. Of course you must expect to occasionally collide with another player when playing the game of basketball it is essentially a non-contact sport. Still it has all the element required for a team sport. Other options that are probably less strenuous across the period of a whole match are baseball or cricket. All of those are team games that definitely require physical fitness, but that are not quite as demand as the sport of basketball. Therefore mature players don’t have to be afraid of not finding a team sport that they enjoy.
