Membership in SLA

Although local SLA-UW events are open to all iSchool students, we encourage you to join the main SLA organization. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the Special Libraries Association (SLA) is the international association representing the interests of thousands of information professionals in 60 countries. The association offers a variety of programs and services designed to help its members serve their customers more effectively and succeed in an increasingly challenging global information arena.

Benefits of joining SLA

  • Reduced student membership rate of $35 (you can receive this rate for up to 3 years!) makes you a member of SLA-UW, SLA-PNC (Pacific Northwest Chapter), and SLA national, thereby exposing you to local, regional, and national insight into information professions.
  • Monthly subscription to Information Outlook which features cutting-edge articles and the most up-to-date news of the information profession.
  • Reduced rates to SLA-PNC as well as national SLA events.
  • You may also join any one of the 25 discipline-specific divisions at no extra cost.
  • Receive electronic publication SLA.COMmunicate to benefit members' careers by providing information on current challenges and trends in the profession, career-long learning, and management tips.
  • Opens up more opportunities for SLA scholarship offerings. SLA awards more than $30,000 in scholarships each year. (See SLA's Scholarship Program page for more information.)
  • Also available to members only is SLA's Job Search online service.
