Sigma Kappa recognizes that academics are an important priority, and we strive to create a positive learning atmosphere within the chapter. With a library, two study rooms, and quiet hours designated in our dining room in the evening, members have plenty of space to study.
Weekly programming includes holding study tables in various campus libraries in order to encourage studying with sisters, as well as raffles for those women who attend all of their classes for the week and visit their professors' office hours. At the end of each quarter, gift cards are raffled off to those who performed well on major tests and papers. Prizes are also given out to the sister who achieves the highest GPA in her new member class.
Most importantly, Sigma Kappa tries to give guidance and provide resources to all members, especially those who may need it the most, such as new members or women who are struggling academically. No matter what path of study a woman goes into, chances are that another Sigma Kappa will be available to help her in her coursework. Some of the majors our women have include: Interdisciplinary Visual Arts, Environmental Studies, Chemical Engineering, Applied and Computational Mathematical Sciences, Business, Political Science, Phisiology, Anthropology, Communication, Spanish, and International Studies.
Congratulations to the member of each pledge class who attained the highest GPA fall quarter:
PC 08: Clara Roberts 3.92
PC 09: Alexa Erickson 3.91
PC 10: Erin Flemming 3.97
PC 11: Erin White 3.91
JPP Scholarship
Jessie Pepper Padelford was a life-long advisor to our chapter from its very inception in 1910. She was an alumna of the very first Sigma Kappa chapter established, the Alpha chapter in Waterville, Maine. Her husband was Frederick Morgan Padelford, the chair of the UW English Department from 1901 to 1918, and Dean of the UW Graduate School from 1918 to 1942. The Padelfords lived a short distance from campus and their home was a frequent meeting place for Sigma Kappa collegiate and alumnae women.
In 1954, a scholarship was established in Jessie Pepper Padelford's honor in order to assist Sigma Kappas at the University of Washington pay for their studies. For the 2010-2011 school year, awards totaling $15,500 were given to Mu chapter members. Scholarship recipients are selected based upon their financial need, scholastic ability, and their Sigma Kappa and community involvement.
Congratulations to the recipients of the Jesse Pepper Padelford Scholarship for 2011:
Erica Legaspi: $7,000
Erin Flemming: $4,500
Dana Talant: $3,500
Jamie Slaven: $500
In addition to the JPP Scholarship, Sigma Kappa's national organization also provides scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students.
