SIAM UW Seminar
The SIAM UW Seminar is a student-run seminar series for graduate students in the Department of Applied Mathematics. We host a variety of talks on research topics and tools that help make us more productive and effective student researchers. We meet most Thursdays at 2:30 in the Wan Conference Room (Lewis 208).
-
Meet the Speaker
The Boeing Distinguished Colloquia brings to campus prominent applied mathematicians from around the world. SIAM UW provides an opportunity for students to personally meet with the speakers to ask questions about their research and career path.
-
Tutorials
We provide tutorials on topics such as surviving graduate school, programming (MATLAB, Mathematica, text editors, version control), and presentation (graphics, posters, writing, websites). Students can access past tutorials on the AMATH Internal Wiki.
-
Panels
We host panels on topics such as applying for fellowships, internships, and postdoc positions; navigating the academic publishing process; and teaching at local institutions including Seattle University, the University of Puget Sound, and Bellevue College.
Due to COVID-19, all meetings in 2020 Spring quarter will be online!
In addition to our weekly seminar, SIAM UW also hosts activities such math fairs for local elementary school students (past events have included collaborations with Lockwood Elementary, the Girl Scouts of Western Washington, and the Pacific Science Center), a BIG (Business, Industry, and Government) networking event for UW graduate students, and an annual departmental poster competition.
