Conference
The Conference committee organizes the Annual Summit on Health Disparities held in the spring of each year. It seeks to establish a timely discourse among the campus community regarding topics pertaining to health and social justice. SEH members who join the Conference committee will work closely with faculty, health professionals, and community organizers to educate the greater student population about these issues.
Social Justice Education Project
The Social Justice Education Project (SJEP) raises awareness about health disparities and social justice issues in local middle and high school classrooms. We recognize that these youth are the impressionable future leaders of our community and our world. Given the right opportunity and instilled with a directed passion, they have the potential to become advocates for the marginalized and influential agents of social change. To educate and inspire these students we plan to visit classrooms and lead workshops that emphasize the multidisciplinary nature of health. By coupling the presentation of new information with the facilitation of discussion we hope to foster an interest in social justice, a broad understanding of the social determinants of health, and a sense of empowerment to change the world for the better. SEH members who join the SJEP committee will have the opportunity both to develop curriculum for this program and directly participate in presentations and workshops.
Outreach
The Outreach committee connects members with campus and community organizations that serve marginalized populations. We work with charities in Seattle and the greater Pacific Northwest such as food banks, homeless shelters, and community health centers. The committee coordinates with these organizations to determine the relative need of each organization and schedule volunteering opportunities. SEH members who join the Outreach committee will be directly involved in community outreach and service.
Policy
The Policy committee supports legislation and causes that aim to achieve greater health equity and social justice for all. It collaborates with organizations working toward these goals. SEH members who join the Policy committee will be involved in grassroots activism.
Media
The Media committee creates and updates all print and digital media for the organization. It also oversees the year-long filming of a documentary that examines health disparities in local marginalized populations. SEH members who join the Media committee will apply their creative passions toward making the world a better place.
Logistics
The Logistics committee coordinates internal activities for the organization. Tasks include orienting new members, scheduling meetings, managing listservs, updating the web site, managing RSO and nonprofit status, grantwriting, fundraising, and working with other committees to support activities and events. SEH members who join the Logistics committee will learn about the inner workings of SEH and shape the future direction of the organization.
