The UW chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering, SAMPE, is a fun way to learn about composites, work on a team, and possibly go to Baltimore, Maryland in the spring to test the composite bridges and wings built.

The bridges and wings are completely student designed, and therefore everyone’s input is valued. The bridge work really starts to pick up spring quarter. Until then, we will keep you updated on other SAMPE activities.

About
Composites are an important field in materials engineering, and students with hands-on composite experience are currently in demand. By joining UW SAMPE, you will be able to learn the processes involved in making composites, such as lay-up design and VARTM, and possibly take on leadership roles as well as interact with engineers in the field.

The UW has a history of winning most of the categories in the competition yearly. The categories include different types of composite fiber such as glass, carbon, and natural fiber. Bridges are rated based on the ratio of load carried to weight of the bridge. Some of the bridges we have built are a few pounds (~3) and can hold over 10,000 pounds.
