Snooze N Cruise

Snooze 'n' Cruise is the Washington Yacht Club's quarterly trip from the university to Blake Island, out in Puget Sound. Blake Island is a marine state park that is located about 3 miles west of Alki Point. It has three campgrounds, and a Native American cultural center. We reserve the group campsite for the event, which is just up the hill from the marina and the cultural center. A grilled dinner is provided Saturday night, and breakfast (pancakes and sausages) and a packed lunch on Sunday. The WYC does not provide alcoholic beverages. The park rangers on the island are responsible for enforcing state law. This includes no underage drinking.

All club members are welcome to come, with or without ratings, and each club member can bring up to two guests from outside of the club. Many boats go on a SNC, including all of the club keelboats. At least one keelboat goes early to reserve dock space, so if you want to have an extra day on the island that is the boat for you.

Another option for members with a dinghy or catamaran skipper rating is sailing a dinghy to Blake Island, allowing you to enjoy the Puget Sound dinghy experience. A keelboat will tow you through the Lake Washington Ship Canal and the locks, then rele ase you to enjoy the sail out to the island. A whaler with a designated Chief will accompany the dinghies as a rescue boat (and candy supplier). Once you arrive at the island, just pull your dinghy up onto the beach. You must have a skipper rating to take a dinghy on Snooze ‘n’ Cruise.

What To Bring

• SACK LUNCH for Saturday
• Durable (no glass or porcelain ) plate, bowl, cup, utensils, dish cloth, and cloth napkin
• Water bottle
• Rain gear & dry change of clothes
  Never been sailing on a keelboat, and don't know what to wear? We recommend the "3 layer system." That means thermals under, fleece in the middle, and a rain jacket-rain pants outer layer. This works well in both wet and war mer conditions, because you can mix and match layers.
• Ski or cold weather gloves
• Sun glasses and hat
• Sleeping bag
• Tent
• Flashlight
• Games or musical instruments (optional)
• Anti-seasickness medication or wrist bands (if needed)
• A minimum of stuff (there is not a huge amount of space on the boats)

Requirements

• Money - Cost is $20 for club members, $30 for guests, $10 for child (10 & Under)
• Work Party - You must attend the SNC work party the Thursday before the cruise. This is where you will pay (by cash or check), and help organize the equipment and do some pre-loading of the boats. This is the only place that we will accept payment.  No work party, no payment, no cruise.
• Help Out - Each person attending will be assigned a food prep or clean up job to do while on the island

On the morning of the SNC, we will meet at the WAC at 8:00 a.m. to load the boats.  We leave the docks as soon as we are ready, so don't be late. We usually get back to the docks at around 6pm on Sunday, but this can vary greatly depending on the wind.
