Tips and Advice to tourism in Kerala - God's Own Country!

Work in Progress.

Preferred airport in Kerala to fly into for me is Kochi International Airport in Nedumbassery. It is sort of in the middle of the state and if it weren't for the horrendous traffic situaution, going to the rest of the state would be quite easy. Also, Kochi will be the first city in Kerala to inaugurate a metro system, trending to be in service late 2016 or early 2017. The best airlines to fly to Kochi internationally is one of the Middle East 3 such as Emirates, Etihad or Qatar Airways. Another option is to fly Air France, British Airway, Lufthansa to Bengaluru and fly to Kochi domestically from Bengaluru. Since I have family in Bengaluru, I prefer to fly there and then fly domestically to Kochi. I have flown Jet Airways from Muscan, Oman to Kochi.

My family is from Kerala and I lived there for almost 16 years before immigrating to the Pacific Northwest during my high school years. I have been back three times- in 2009, 2012 and 2015

Kerala has lots and lots of lush greenery. The monsoon season which starts in June and lasts through August is the wettest season. And the flora grows like crazy these months. All the rivers and streams are overflowing and typically there won't be a shorttage of water. However, a bad monsoon is disastrous in all aspects. Recent lack of rain during the monsoon meant lots of problems for people in general and especially farmers.

Kerala has three main religions and they are Hinduism, Christianity and Isalm. The prominence of each vary by region. Isalm is more prominent in the Northern part of the state compared to Christianity. Hinduism is prominent throughout. There are lots of old Temples, Mosques and Churches scattered throughout the state. The part of Kerala that I am familiar with the most is the region (district) of Kottayam. Kerala is admisnistratively divided into Districts. Kottayam is one of them. District would be analogous with county in the United States.

The cuisine of Kerala is greatly influenced by the religion practiced by the community. There are dishes that are fairly unique to followers of Christianity for example. Some dishes are consumed only during specific religious events. In general, the people of various religions live together in harmony, but marriage between couples of two different religions is frowned upon even today, although this is becoming more and more uncommon

Villages, known as Gramapanchayats form the backbone of the society of Kerala. Cities are becoming more and more important but majority of people still live in Gramapanchayats. There is typically a president for each Gramapanchayat who is an elected official. And there are members who represent wards which are how Gramapanchayats are divided up.
