Location: HUB 209/309
Time: 5pm
Fall Quarter 2010
- October 7th (First meeting!) - Room 209
Our first meeting was great success! Thanks to everyone who came! We had a brief introduction by our Kaplan sponsors about our partnership for the year. Kaplan is gracious enough to offer us awesome discounts on their courses and if you missed the meeting please contact an officer for more information. There will be a can't miss opportunity for members on Saturday October 17th from 2:00pm-5:00pm at the Kaplan Center on the Ave (4216 University Way NE Seattle, WA 98105). It is a FREE practice exam that will help give you a good idea of how you will do on the PCAT and what areas you need to focus on. They are actually going to have someone proctor the exam as well which will be a great help in setting up the atmosphere. In order to participate you must register online at their website at http://www.kaptest.com/practice.
We also had a blast making the boxes at our "glitter" party! A special thanks to those members who stayed to help. We decorated about 7 -9 boxes and we will soon be distributing those around campus for our toy drive this quarter!
Lastly, we apologize for not bring enough change and enough binders during membership sign ups. We will obtain more binders as well as bring enough change at the next meeting. We forgot to mention at the meeting that there is actually a deadline for registration. It is November 18th. After the date, you must contact an officer to become a member.
- October 21st - Room 209
Thanks to all that attended Wednesday's meeting! We would like to update you all on what happened. First we brought everyone up to speed in regards to the progress of our toy drive. The boxes we decorated at our "glitter party" are ready for assignment. :-) Currently, we are verifying spots around campus to place the boxes. Once these areas are finalzed we will let you know where they are. In the mean time begin collecting items for the drive if you haven't already. When finding toys, stuffed animals, books, etc., make sure they are a good condition. The Bellingham Shelter, will take anything as long as it is in decent shape, but Children's hospital will only acccept brand new items.
Secondly, we went over some of the volunteering and job shadowing opportunities for the quarter. Thanks to those that signed up to volunteer at the food bank and/or shadow at Bartells! Those that signed up will ! receive an email in regards to the event within the next week or so. But remember, in order to volunteer or job shadow, you must be a paid member. If you are not a paid member by the time the event that you signed up for occurs, then unfortunately you will not be able to participate in that event.
For most of the meeting Erin Gallagher, a pediatric pharmacist from Childrens Hospital, spoke to us about her profession and various aspects of her life. As those who came know, she was a pleasure to have. It was a joy to see someone so genuinely passionate about the field Erin's very knowledgeable, sincere, and willing to answer any questions. She was kind enough to leave us her email address, so If you have any to ask feel free to reach her at ekg@u.washington.edu.
Lastly, we want to reiterate that the registration deadline for the quarter is November 18th. If you are not a member and are interested in becoming one, then please register by November 18th. Also, as mentioned above, if you are not a paid member by the date of a volunteering or job shadowing event, then you will NOT be allowed to take part in that event!
- November 4th - Room 209
First of all the officers talked about the various activities we have going on until the end of the quartehr. The toy drive is coming along and boxes are going to places at Odegaard, Suzallo, Business school (Balmer Hall), Schmitz and Kaplan. We are looking for people to volunteer in monitoring the boxes a couple times a week. You should have recieved an email yesterday with more details on this (if you didn't let us know and we'll send you the email). If this is something that interests you then please shoot us an email.
Secondly, Denise mentioned that we wouldn't be able to go as a club on Dec. 2 (day of our last meeting) to Children's Hospital and meet with the children and families and distribute the toys. While we can't do that, we should still have fun on our last meeting of the quarter so we are planning to have a pizza/game party. This will include free food, time to hang out with fellow prepharm students and also current UW school of pharmacy students. In order to cover the costs of all this, we will have a fundraiser.
This fundraiser will take place November 23rd (12:30-3:30) and November 24th (8:30-3:30) out on the HUB lawn. We will be selling eggnog and cookies (these are subject to change, if you have any suggestions let us know!) Not only will we take this time to raise funds for our party but will also promote our toy drive and let people know about the cause and where we have placed boxes. The club really needs your help in tabling so if you are free at all during the above days and times listed then contact us so we can add you to our tabling list, thanks!
After going through our plans for the rest of the quarter, we invited Micki, the Chair of PharmD admissions and a professor at the UWSOP to share with us the details of application process. She supplied numerous pointers and if you were there I'm sure you felt well educated about what it takes to get into the UWSOP by the end of the meeting. If you have any questions for us from the meeting you can email us. Micki covered a TON of information ranging from required scores to classes you can take to replace a previous bad grade to the interview process so if you missed any of that or uncertain about what she said just shoot us a message. Also, feel free to ask Micki any questions that you may have at kedzm@uw.edu or you can reach her by phone (206-616-2729). She also gave the contact info of Cherelyn who is a prepharm advisor. Her email/number are cherelyn@uw.edu/2066162916.
- November 18th - Room 309 (Registration deadline!)
We had Allison and Lisa from Kaplan come in and share some information in regards to what they can offer to help students study for the PCAT and also promoted a deal they have going on right now ($200 off any Kaplan course). If you have any questions you would like to ask them, you can reach reach Allison at allison.hoag@kaplan.com and Lisa at stouf1@spu.edu. Also feel free to email us if you have any other questions regarding Kaplan and the PCAT.
