Spring Quarter 2009
- April 7th, 2009
The first meeting of the quarter will be next Tuesday, April 7th at 5pm in HUB 209. We will be having an instructor from Kaplan do a personal statement seminar in which we will also be discussing the PharmCAS, UW, and WSU personal statements. The personal statements are an integral part of the application, so this is an excellent opportunity to get some important tips and insight. There will also be an announcement about the Kaplan PCAT course auction we will be holding this quarter. The test dates are coming up fast for the next application cycle and you may want to consider taking a Kaplan PCAT course. The retail value for the course is $1399, so the auction will be a great way bid and get the course at a huge discount. Also, please sign up for our Relay for Life team if you haven't already done so. It is a great way to support a wonderful cause and hang out with your fellow pre-pharmers. The event is 5/9-5/10 at Husky Stadium, but you don't have to stay for the entire event. To sign up, go to to www.uwrelay.org, click "sign up," click "join a team," search for pre-pharmacy club, and click "join." There is a $10 donation required that will go towards the team fundrasing goal. Please sign up by Thursday, April 2nd, if you want to be guaranteeed a T-shirt.
- April 21st, 2009
The meeting will consist of a pharmacy student panel made up of current UWSOP students. They will be there to talk about their experiences in pharmacy school and also to offer first-hand advice on the admissions process.

We will be having John Collaro, a nuclear pharmacist from GE come do a presentation. Nuclear pharmacy is a specialty area of pharmacy dedicated to the compounding and dispensing of radioactive materials for use in medical procedures. This is an excellent chance to learn about an often overlooked field of pharmacy. This is our last general meeting before officer elections on June 2nd, so don't miss out! - June 2nd, 2009
Officer Elections! Last Meeting of the year!
Winter Quarter 2009
- January 13th, 2009
The focus of the meeting will be on extracurricular activities that you can pursue to help your chances of getting into pharmacy school. We will have a guest speaker from the Carlson Center come speak about volunteer opportunities and also be discussing how to get your pharmacy assistant license. Please stick around until the end of the meeting as we will be conducting sign-ups for MLK Day of Service, shadowing at Hall Health Pharmacy, University Food Bank volunteering, and mock interviews. - January 27th, 2009
GUEST SPEAKER: James D. Scott (“Jim”)
He is an academic counselor and lead of Gateway Center Undergraduate Advising. He can help as a pre-pharmacy advisor and things we need to consider when applying to Pharmacy schools. He will out important things when applying to UW Pharmacy school such as starting applications early and making sure you have followed all the required steps! To find more about Gateway center advising in Mary Gates Hall visit: www.washington.edu/uaa/gateway/advising.
We also have mock interviews continuing and signing up for the Valentine fundraiser on February 13th. We are attempting to raise money to have a social event (possibly bowling in the HUB) with your pharmacy school mentors. So PLEASE volunteer for one of the time slots on February 13th at our next meeting on February 10th at 5pm (HUB 309).
- February 10th, 2009
We will be holding our next meeting this Tuesday, February 10th at 5pm in HUB 309. Kristine Kero, from the Career Center, will be giving a presentation on interview strategies for pharmacy school. This is an excellent opportunity to get tips if you have applied and are awaiting your interview or are considering applying in the future. The interview is an essential part of the pharmacy school admission process and it is never too early to start preparing. As many of you know, we still have slots for the mock interviews we are holding, so we encourage you to sign up. **Please bring your USB flash drive if you wish to receive a copy of practice interview questions.
We will also be introducing some volunteer opportunities we have coming up. We will be volunteering at the Diabetes Expo in April and we have Relay for Life coming up in May. More details will be announced at the meeting. As always, you may also sign up for our weekly volunteering at the University Food Bank.
Also, mark your calendars for 2/21! There will be a free PCAT practice test at the Kaplan center on the Ave. (4216 University Way NE) from 2 to 5pm. The practice test is modeled after the real test and they give you a detailed scores analysis at the end. Members who took the practice test this last fall reported that it was very helpful!
- February 24th, 2009
We thought this would be an excellent opportunity to have the meeting be an informal discussion where you, the members, can bring up any questions you have regarding the pre-pharmacy and admissions process. The officers will open up the meeting by discussing current issues in pharmacy. Knowledge of these issues is especially important if you plan on doing well at your admissions interview. We will then open up the floor to you guys. Be ready to ask questions and share your pre-pharmacy experiences with your peers!
At the meeting, we will also be having our Kaplan representative, Dorian, introduce a tutoring opportunity with Kaplan. We will also be having members of the Rho Chi Society (UWSOP's academic honor society) come in to sell reuseable grocery bags with the UWSOP logo on it, as part of a fundraiser they are having. The price is $4 per bag or $3 each for 3 bags. I have attached the flyer to this email, so you can see what they look like. It will be pretty stylish for your future pharmacy textbooks, so please support Rho Chi.
Sign-ups this week include our biweekly University Food Bank volunteering, mock interviews, and Diabetes Expo volunteering on 4/18. At the Expo, you will be able to volunteer with the screenings pharmacists/pharmacy students will be holding. It will be a great opportunity to network with the pharmacy community as well as interact with the diabetic population, which you will surely come across in your future career as a pharmacist. More information will be sent about the Expo, but please sign-up at the meeting for first dibs on the volunteer shifts. See you at the meeting!
- March 10th, 2009
The topic of the meeting will be geriatric/consultant pharmacy. We have a few UW pharmacy students, who are part of ASCP (American Society of Consultant Pharmacists), that have prepared a presentation and game for us. This will be a great chance to learn more about geriatric/consultant pharmacy as it is becoming more applicable with the growing senior population. This is also a great opportunity to bring up any general questions you may have about the School or application process to the students. We will also have our weekly sign-ups for University Food Bank volunteering and this is the last week to sign up for mock interviews with the officers. You may request for a mock interview next quarter, but there will be no official sign-ups. For the Diabetes Expo on 4/18, I ended up reserving all 27 spots and there are currently only 4 spots left for the 3-6pm shift. If you haven't signed up and are still interested, please email us on a first-come basis. If you haven't signed up for our Relay for Life Team, please go to www.uwrelay.org to sign up. Remember to select Pre-Pharmacy Club when joining. This is our last meeting of the quarter so we hope to see everyone there!
Autumn Quarter 2008
- Nov 17th, 2008
We will be having a guest speaker, Meredith Potochnic, do a presentation at the meeting. Meredith is a clinical and research pharmacist at Harborview's Madison Clinic specializing in HIV/AIDS. She is also a part-time retail pharmacist at Rite Aid. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about hospital and retail pharmacy and how one can develop a career between the two.
For the first time, and as promised from last year, we will also be launching our Pre-Pharmacy Club Student Mentor Program. I have worked with Tahnee Marginean, a UWSOP pharmacy student and president of UPPOW/APhA-ASP, to develop a program where we will pair up pre-pharmacy students with a current pharmacy student. This is an excellent opportunity for you guys to get first-hand, one-on-one advice from pharmacy students that have gone through the pre-pharmacy process. We will be handing out application forms and collecting your contact information, so please do not miss out! Hope to see you all there!
