Prosthetics and Orthotics Program Today

The Prosthetics and Orthotics program at the University of Washington is a clinician based curriculum which has many of its own unique characteristics.  Upon completion of two years worth of prerequisites and acceptance into the program, students participate in two additional years of a variety of rehabilitation courses.  The greatest emphasis is put on the prosthetics and orthotics courses in which students experience patient evaluation, fabrication and delivery of devices starting as early as the fourth week of the program.  Other courses include an introduction into physical therapy procedures such as range of motion testing and manual muscle testing with the PT students.  In the first year of the program, many of the PO courses are spent with both Physical and Occupational Therapy students, which gives students a team approach to their patient rehabilitation plan.

The UW curriculum is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE).  Upon completion of the curriculum students are required to complete a year of residency for each discipline before taking their American Board Certification Test for that discipline.
