"Teaching Poetry in the Literature Classroom"

Many students and instructors avoid poetry in their classrooms, or come to the subject reluctantly, with certain expectations and resistances to poetry that may be hard to struggle against. Poems, however, can be wonderfully rewarding, worthwhile, intellectually exciting and wholly fun if given the chance. Please join our panel of five current and former UW English department doctoral students for a roundtable discussion on the teaching of poetry in the literature classroom. Three of us hold MFAs as well; all five have taught poetry in the context of the literature classroom and our interests cover several centuries. Discussion will include classroom strategies and resources, handling student (and instructor) resistance and expectations, the overlap of poetry with other genres and forms of expression, ways to integrate the occasional poem into a mostly-fiction or theory class, and more. Bring your woes, your joys, comments and questions. Discussion facilitators include Jonathan Crimmins, Matthew Levay, Terry Schenold, Susan Taylor and Cody Walker.
