"Out in the Classroom: Setting the Stage for Coming Out"
February 1, 2005

This roundtable will feature three UW instructors--Honni van Rijswijk, TA (English); Luke Gutzwiller, TA (Math); and Lisa Carscadden, Lecturer (English Language Programs - ESL). This informal roundtable discussion, moderated by Matthew James Vechinski (English, TA), will focus on if, when, and how to be an out Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender instructor at the university level. Special emphasis will be placed on if and when outing oneself is helpful or necessary, considerations to take into account prior to outing oneself, and how to bring up one's sexual orientation in the classroom. Presenters will briefly share their thoughts and ideas relating to these topics with discussion to follow. All members of the University community are encouraged to attend-faculty, staff, TAs, RAs, and students.
